GITS is severely overrated and delivers virtually nothing in return for being so. That it keeps being foisted on us all in varying formats doesn't attest to it being a good story, it attests to the level of pandering the studio's willing to go to to force-feed it to us in the hopes that saturation will eventually equate to acceptance of its "hidden" genius, when the reality is that if it were genius they wouldn't be so hard-up to shovel it into everyone's faces while screaming "Watch me!"

It's not that it's good or great because it's """cyberpunk""" or because the characters are so exciting, or because Oshii likes to vomit 18th century philosophy or anything like that.

The strength of GitS lies in the one thing that only few in this medium can do on a similar level as Oshii.
Every single shot is amazingly constructed, every single shot draws you in, while at the same time the film is coherent and somewhat enjoyable as far as plotting and characters and whatever other bullshit there is go.
It's, on a purely technical level, a near perfect film.
Sure other people can construct more beautiful images or put them together in amazing ways exploiting the medium for all it's worth, but they're not as consistent overall.

This is what makes GitS special.
