The anime is average as an adventure fantasy with harem and comedy. S3 is pretty bad story-wise, but it has exceptional fanservice.

If you can overlook harem element and just want plot that's about war, politics, nobles defending their nations, betrayal, magic, and all that then read the superior light novels that's a decent read.
