Scanlation thread.

What are you working on? What do you want scanlated?

Are there people that really use InDesign for typesetting?

I just started scanlating last month, and I picked something mostly just to start somewhere, and because it had nice raws available.
I think the series is maybe a 6/10, and no one really reads it.
I still like releasing it, and I don't care about e-peen, but I've been wondering if I should switch to something that's more popular, something more people would enjoy.
At the same time, there are a few people reading the current series, and I'd feel a bit bad if I dropped it.

Do you think the needs of the many should outweigh the needs of the few? Would it be shitty of me to drop the series in favor of something more popular? Or do you think it shouldn't even matter how many people read what I scanlate?
Sorry if this comes off as blogposting.
>>
>>148204278
>the needs of many

What the fuck do you mean needs? Scanlate what you enjoy and thats it. Just don't turn into a faggot that thinks they're a hero because they have 1000> people following a series.
>>
>>148204459
Simmer down mate, I was just having a lark with the Kerry picture.
Like I said, I'm not looking for more people to praise me or anything, but a popular series means more people are getting enjoyment out of the same amount of work on my part.
>>
>>148204566

Who gives a shit about how popular a series is, especially since you're new.

If you're competent, start with short series or even do a bunch of oneshots.
>>
>>148204902
I had briefly looked around for some oneshot tanks when I started, but had trouble really finding any that both interested me and had raws available. I'll try digging a little deeper next time though.
Thank you for the response.
>>
>>148205157
Oneshot volumes don't usually get scanned unless the author is pretty popular. Depending on what you're interested in, there could be ebooks you can buy and rip for cheap though.
>>
>>148205157

Check deadscanlations, there are dozens of oneshots that he scanned on there. Most award winning.

First you need to route the traffic through Fiddler proxy, see if the app uses SSL, if the images are encrypted or scrambled, etc.
>>

How do you get traffic from an emulator to fiddler?
>>
>>148212063
The same way you'd do it for a browser? It's not like an emulator magically hides it's web traffic, fiddler should pick it up fine.

>>
>>148204566
I've been fansubbing anime for almost 10 years and I can tell you this: most people are ungrateful piece of shits. You'll be considered a hero during the process of scanlation, but after that they won't give two shits about you and will forget about you. It's YOUR time, scanlate what YOU enjoy mostly.

>>
>>148213463
I can see how it would help with a lot of the fancy typesetting they do. Still overkill for scanlation though, with the amount of work it would take to make it worth using you'd really need to be paid.
>>
>>148214795
I can see your point but also the volume of content they go through I would image it would be useful for organization at least.
>>
>>148215115
I'm sure it would make things go faster and that'd be a huge help with their volume, but how exactly does it help with organization specifically?
>>
>>148215115

ID is used because they're actually going to print.
>>
>>148215624
My assumption is the page style organization/linking they could utilize which is better than Illustrator/PS has to offer. Which is what >>148215890 pointed out.

I'm slightly curious and just guessing but they probably export to PDF as one file and use a script to publish on their site. But I could be totally wrong.
>>
>>148215890
ID is used for subscription content (which is digital only) all the same. Pretty much everyone likes doing typesetting in it once they learn the ropes (which should come as no surprise since that's a big part of what InDesign is intended to be used for), but Photoshop is still used for things like redraws.

For scanlations I'd recommend sticking to just Photoshop though because it's really easy to shoot yourself in the foot when it comes to doing digital exports from InDesign and end up with crappy quality as a result, and you need further processing with the good options. With Photoshop you can just use Save for Web and get good results right away.
>>
Ok which one of you said his name three times in the mirror.
>>
>>148216710
Maybe if we ignore him he'll go away.
>>
>>148216710
He probably has a filter set up so "Fakku" is auto-pinned on the catalog.
>>
Okay faggots please help me out.
I recently found out that japs have services that scan whole books for like 100-200 yen or so. I wanted to use s-s-sendai.info, it looks pretty straightforward and the first try is for free. But I'm not sure if they deal with porn; at least their FAQ doesn't mention anything about it.
Anybody used any of these before?
>>
>>148212527
>most people are ungrateful piece of shits
Agreed. They only want more and care nothing for the people who go through all the effort to bring them it.
>>
>>148217343
I'm going to hang myself if you can really get scans of anything you want for 200 yen. Don't you have to pay for the book as well?
>>
>>148218803
Of course you have to pay for it, shipping too. But it's still miles better than shipping it all the way over here and scanning it myself.
A lot of shit I want to get goes for 1-100 yen used too, so I'd end up paying like 5 bucks for the whole thing.
I'll post results here if I don't fuck up and it works out.
>>
>>148219027
If you can order books yourself and ship to their address it would be perfect. Good luck, keep us updated.

Those aren't really that hard, just tedious. The top-right one took like 5-10 minutes of not really paying attention to it, you could make everything go faster by typesetting it first and covering as much of the Japanese text as possible and then making sure it covers the bad parts of the redraw once it's done.

That's actually even easier, especially since you're using digital raws. Just get good with the pen tool and mark all the curves, then paint or clone the gray underneath.
I got bored halfway through, but you get the idea.

>>
>>148224418
How is it even shit? All the details are there, and the gray colors are actually the way the author intended them. If the little dots in the screentones are that important to you, you might want to rethink your priorities.

This seems like a good thread to ask what are your thoughts on ideal leveling. So people like to get their whites and blacks a pure as they can. While other say if you do it that way you will get rid of some of the finer shading on a page.

Me I just like my blank white spaces to look white I don't like it when my pages have a gray tint to them

it's fine? why would you leave the areas that aren't supposed to have printed matter as grey? if you're worried about the relative balance of the greys you can always use a curve instead of linear leveling

>>148231842

when you're leveling, you're bringing up the roof and floor of the blacks and white. if you're leveling it linearly, it just means that the you're drawing a simple line between the two new values. Just imagine a line going from the bottom of the graph at your black value (92) all the way to the top of the graph at the white value (231.) Everything in between those values (the grays) will now be adjusted to a new value relative to that line. If you're using a curve, it just means that you can modify the... well, curve that these new values are going to fall on. You can get something closer to the original grey balance may have been. In other words, it gives you more control over the change that will occur of dark greys going to black or light greys going to white, instead of making it a consistent slope.
>>
>>148232273

sorry. a sentence got deleted in the middle there. and i meant ceiling, not roof. but you should get the point if you think about what leveling is doing.
>>
>>148232273

Just be careful and don't order a monochrome scan because some services offer it, they make the whole thing look like total garbage with literally two colors. I think ScanSnap software is fucking retarded and by default it makes some pages monochrome when it thinks they don't contain any greys. Avoid services that use it in general.

That was just cleaned with action.
First of all, never use jpg unless you saving already cleaned/scanlated color scans to upload for the public consumption. And don't store/save b/w scans in RGB.
Usually you scan those at 300-600 dpi and then clean at that resolution, so you won't loose too much details. And obviously you doing it with action and batch process, then clean what left (usually stuff at borders, as you can see here >>148235374 ) by hand or by downscaling and cleaning with action again or record whole action from start to finish at intended resolution. You probably still will need to clean manually here and there though.
As for cleaning itself, I say it's better to use scanner software to begin with to scan everything with the same parameters, but hardly anyone listening. So you level a little, to make it close to b/w but not quite - mostly you leave black slider before peak starting, white slider a little closer to peak, and middle slider more or less half of what black numbers (i.e. if you have 50 in black, then you have ~1,25 in the middle). Then you use select > color range for, say, black, reducing selection a little (1 pixel usually enough) and level it until it's black. Same with white. Repeat if needed. Probably use Topaz before all that to smooth paper texture a little.

What is the point? If the author can't end something without dragging it on for that long, then it must have a lot of padding. How long does the entire thing take place over?

Would anyone redraw this panel, not the sound effect, but just the text besides the bubble?
>>
>>148240897
It's 38 volumes actually. The point of what? Why I'm scanlating it or the point of the story? I wouldn't say it drags as each "arc" has a lot of development on the MC and the surrounding characters to the point where characters come back 10 volumes later relatively different. There's also a lot of mystery behind it all. The story spans like 3-4 years or so.

How would you translate a situation like this where a girl changes her personal pronoun to ウチ to show how slutty she's become?

Seems literally impossible to put into English since there's no sort of equivalent of slutty airhead pronouns.
>>
>>148242390
And how you translated whole line for now?
>>
>>148242698

I haven't yet, no point translating a line when you don't know how to word half of it.
>>
>>148242390
The same way you do with all other forms of "me": you don't/can't.

I'd try to look into an more informal, fitting expression for イケ that shows the difference.
I can't help much with that since english isn't my native lang. and I have no idea what would be good for it.

"Am I sexy yet?"
"I'm too hot for my pants"
"Am I the shit now?"

Or other idiotic sentence like that...

On a curious note, in my native language they translated the difference between the 拙者 and 俺 from Rurouni Kenshin as "this servant" and "I" and that was simply ridiculous bad.
>>
>>148240026
Hold up, burning Bakuon Rettou like that c'mon.

Hey, anon who asked about getting permissions to reuse translations a few threads ago. I asked one of the two release groups needed, and got a yes. Assuming the other one says yes, I can start.

However, there's some bits on the translation from both i'm skeptical on if they were translated correctly throughout the whole series. What's the best place I can go to to get people "proofread" those particular parts to see if they were translated right, or which of the two translations is more accurate?

Again, I don't need somebody to translate the whole thing for me, just look at pieces of the existing translation, and go either "yeah this is right" or "This could be better". I can ask here, of course, but I plan on doing 1 chapter or more per day, and this thread isn't up every day.
>>
>>148247195
Go to /djt/ and post it saying that it's your first time translating. There'll be at least 1 autist who combs through the entire work for errors so he can call you out.
>>
>>148242390
put some slutty bimboish english spin on it like the overuse of the word 'like'
>>
>>148247195
Do this >>148247289 then release few chapters with "help wanted" and maybe you find somebody for permanent job.
>>
>>148247334
I think part of the challenge in that line specifically is that she starts 私 and corrects herself, so it's not just about translating the ウチ but also the pronoun switch
>>
>>148247520
Change the whole bubble then

"This? I went to the tanning salon with Takiya. How is it? Does it... I mean... Doncha think this is, like, totally awesome?"
>>
>>148247431
>>148247289
Alright, on a related note, I found out the series also has 2 guidebooks and an artbook nobody has scanned yet.

What's the cheapest option for commissioning somebody to scan and translate those without it being a shit job?

I already bought copies of the guidebook since they were super cheap, so the actual cost of the physical copies being purchases is covered and i'd just need to ship it to the person scanning and pay however much they want to scan it/then find and pay somebody to translate the whole thing
>>
>>148248092
Depends, if it's a really big artbook then you might need someone with a larger than normal scanner. Also, I can't really speak for other people, but when I scan things I know I prefer to just get money through paypal or something and buy the books myself so I'm not giving random anons my address.
Out of curiosity, what series?
>>
>>148248092
Wouldn't it be easier to unbind and scan them by yourself in some printing shop or whatever?
>>

Gash bell

>>148248382
I suppose, but I've never done it before and i'd rather trust somebody else who has experience.
>>
What do you guys think about working with those "I want to edit/translate/etc" people but give like zero fucks about quality?
>>
>>148248926
>giving a fuck about quality
lmao as long as the translations is understandable and you can roughly see on the scans what's going on, that's enough
>>
>>148248926
They're probably incompetent fucks who would put out the same quality (read: garbage) if they tried anyway.
>>
>>148248926
They're better than working with "I want to edit/translate/etc" people who unironically think they're hot stuff at it when they're not.
>>
>>148248698
>Gash bell
I'm honestly not sure it'd be worth it. The artbook maybe, but you'd have to either find someone incredibly dedicated to the series or pay them a ton to translate guidebooks for an old series. Guidebooks have more than ten times as much text than manga too, so it'd take a while in addition to that.
>>
>>148248926
I would try not to work with them. Though I only need translator, and can get away with mediocre one.
>>
>>148249115
God damn this is awful. A translator I have translates into awkward English for no reason, and a typesetter uses a bunch of huge fonts for something extremely simple so it looks awful. It's not like they're bragging, but they could make it look so much nicer.
Another time a cleaner I had would make the raws look like they had been scanned in monochrome. I don't fucking understand.
>>
>>148249449
>can get away with a mediocre translator when translation is the most important
I hate this meme.
>>
>>148249527
When you either have this translation or don't have any, almost anybody would choose this translation, since hooking another autist might be unlikely. Just hope this will trigger someone to volunteer for translation while spaming wanted/help pages.
>>
>>148249500
Why not call them out on it?
>>
>>148249766
I guess it can be awkward, especially if you was looking for people under "just to get things done duuude" and without "we will help you to learn/improve".
>>
>>148249766
They seem so confident in their skills, telling them to change practically everything isn't very nice when they're just helping out. It's not like it's that bad, but it could definitely be better.
If it's too awful I'll tell them. I also work with some chinks who can't speak english for shit and have tons of mistranslations, and I just end up rewriting the whole thing. Fuck them.
>>
>>148250168
They will never know they aren't as good as they think if no one tells them though.
>>
>>148249115
I disagree, these type might be the people I'd never hang out drinking with, but if they think they're hot shit they should at least have some skills to back it up.
The other type, however, simply doesn't care.

This is speaking strictly about providing decent work.
>>
>>148249191
I mean considering if I don't pay somebody to translate, it know it'd never get translated, I don't mind paying a lot of money, it's just a matter of time till I can save up enough to be able to spend that much money on it.

I just need suggestions of who to ask
>>
>>148250478
Can't be helped m8. They're just helping on the side, if their main group is okay with what they do then it's better if I leave it like that.
But you think those chinks care that their script is awful and full of errors? All their others projects are the same and nobody in the group gives a fuck.
>>
>>148250572
Well if money really isn't an issue, your best bet would probably be to look for groups/translators you're confident would do a good job and have done similar series in the past so they'd be likely to be interested.

Even if they don't work on that kind of series, you can probably make up for that if you pay enough, although then you might want to get someone very familiar with the series to look it over (or you could do that yourself).

I'd even consider it myself but I'm already trying to clear out a huge backlog of shit to translate.
>>
>>148250572

Find someone who actually translates for a living and ask for a commission, rather than N4 teenagers. There' that one TL who translates game interviews as a hobby (site is Zelda something), email and ask.
>>
>>148250895
So should I just ask the two groups who translated Gash Bell to begin with? The same ones I got/am getting permission from to reuse their translations?

>>148251038
Would somebody like that be willing to do it though? Obviously none of us give a shit about copyright infringement but somebody like him might.
>>
>>148251133

TLs dont give a shit dude, they have a hard time getting work as it is and they're paid per word anyway. Just say you want the script for personal use.
>>
>>148251133
If they're still actively translating stuff, sure, might be worth a try.

>Translator can hardly grasp basic grammar and completely ignores punctuation

Why do people do this? Isn't it common sense that you should master the languages you're translating from and to?
>>
>>148253253
Some people use it as a way to learn the language.
Some people just want popularity, which is more closely linked to output/speed than quality.
>>
>>148250168
>>148249500
As someone who has horribly fucked up editing, and still continues to do so from time to time, I can say that I would have loved it if people had pointed out everything I had been doing wrong.

I hate the idea that people think I'm doing a terrible job but don't tell me that. If I'm doing something wrong, stop me from making that mistake again.

I started translating when I had like 1 month of experience with moon, and I used it to improve and read more stuff.

Not sure if it was a good thing, I might've learned more if I just read, but now that I'm much more comfortable and confident in my moonskills, I went back to check my older translations and they're surprisingly correct.

Moon is easier than most people think, and I'm by no means have mastered it yet, nor english, but I feel I do a decent job but definitely not perfect.

If I were to wait for me to "master" (subjective) it, I'd need like 10 years of studying to translate some ero-crap.
>>
>>148255811
>>148253590

Alright, I understand not being a moon master while translating manga for free, but I've run into way too many translators who can't write a coherent English sentence either.

I feel they should at least have a solid grasp on one of the two languages they're using.
>>
Bunny's Scans is looking for translators

They work on gay shit with decent art.
OPERA and OnBLUE published work for example.

I don't work for them just spreading the word .

I've got the email if interested, you can also find it on their site/livejournal.

That's a typo or whatever you'd call it. I was writing "I'm no master" but changed it midway.

Not that it matters, just so you get in peace with your autistic egofaggotry.
>>
>>148256067
Why do people always expect translators and others to fall at their feet when they ask for help? Most likely everyone is always stacked with things already and backlogs to clear.
>>
>>148257161
I don't get any kind of entitled vibe from that post at all.
It seems like a very innocent "hey if you're interested in this kind of content, this group would like your help."
If there were a place to ask on /a/, this would be the place.

>>
>>148205559
Whoa, thanks for this
>>
>>148220410
>wouldn't do them justice
You can't. The very act of scanlation is an insult to the series and a slap in the fact to the mangaka. Anyone who had the slightest bit of respect for the work would tell others to learn the fucking language before ever going as far as butchering the authorship just to insert their ego into it.

Scanlators are fucking scum, just like the scum who read scanlations. One wants to feed their ego and the other wants to feed their desire for consumption.
