The second arc started off weak but ended as the highest point of the show, though. There couldn't have been a better ending, everything about it was perfect.

Overrated. Only became popular because Gainax spent money making it look pretty and kept it stupid because they couldn't write a good story.

Would watch Majestic Prince, Fafner Gaogaigar, Shin Mazinger, or King Gainer over it any day

Fantastic show. The plot itself was never a big draw of the series for me but the super robot aspects, music and animation (barring episode 4) were as stylish and entertaining as could be. Upping the ante at every turn and eventually reaching (S)TTGL at the ending was perfect. I know the Getter Robo inspiration is very blatant but I'm still awaiting a GR animation besides New and Armageddon to have this sort of craziness.

The Parallel Works were nice too, each had their own style while still fitting with the series as a whole.

Pretty fantastic anime with an unfortunately terrible fanbase of casuals. Often it is the only mecha anime that people watch and they don't understand its context in the genre it belongs to. TTGL is like a distillation of mecha cliches with a very strong emotional kick but no ensuing substance. It's like eating a food with a powerful overwhelming flavor but a whole plate of it would never fill you up because it's lighter than air. There's nothing to chew on, nothing to reflect on. You just remember the awesome parts. It's essentially just nostalgiabait, something that was almost made to be remembered fondly years later for its emotional highs, but nobody ever really cares all that much about the setting or characters beyond making simple value statements (fuck Rossieu! kamina ;_;, etc).

TL;DR it is literally a meme anime, and I don't mean that as an insult.

Why don't you just judge it by what it is, a fun ride that tries to provide an emotional high. Even if it doesn't deal with any complex themes you can't say it has bad storytelling or plot when it achieves the emotional highs it sets out to achieve beautifully. It's good for what it is, just unfortunate in that both people who love it and people who hate it are retarded.

I just started rewatching it, still great. If I were ever to show it to someone though, I'd have them skip the OP for the first three episodes. Forgot how much it deflated some hype moments.

Haven't seen anyone say that besides the haters. The show's good, we all enjoyed it as simple fun that made you feel badass, but we can all agree it's nowhere near the best example of the mecha genre.
