Yoshika was created to be part of the 501st from the very start. Concept art and all. The anime just showed how she got stuck with them.

Meanwhile, the 502nd as a whole existed for years already. However, Hikari was just created for the anime. And yet for something that was created as a 502nd anime, there sure is a noticeable lack of 502nd girls in it's very first episode.

I mean, shit, Nao or Sadako's circumstances already primed them up to be the designated main character. They fulfill the "Must be a Fuso Witch" requirement too.

I will never understand what the fuck went through Humikane's head to create yet another Yoshika just for the anime.

I'll need to watch it again, but I think I liked the setup more than SW S1s first episode.

Its because you got to see Notyoshika actually training at a real witch academy, unlike Yoshika who just kind of ends up with the 501. Notyoshika is working hard to get what she wants unlike Yoshika who kind of had it thrust upon her.

The worst part is, Nao and Sadako can easily fulfill that role of "Newbie-ish MC"

Nao is one of the newer members of the 502nd. She's the least experienced too. So she can fill the role of the greenhorn to war character. And as a nice contrast to the relatively pacifistic Yoshika, Nao is actually too excited to fuck some Neuroi up. Hell, her recklessness is actually one of her biggest character flaws.

Sadako while not exactly a newbie to War, is a newbie to the 502nd. If Takamura is wary about straying from the Yoshika archetype as the MC vehicle character, why not just make Sadako the MC? She's literally just a more mature and less naive Yoshika.

Both of them are girls that have been with the 502nd since their inception in the drawing board of Humikane's mind.

Adding a new Fuso Yoshika-esque character to the 502nd at this point just really fucking seems redundant and unneeded.

Judging by the opening, she seems to be fond of skipping the first two steps. I mean shit, she just fucking rammed through that Neuroi warship.

Also I like that they seem to be showing the Witches' specialty fighting styles in the opening at least.

For example, Jose is supposed to be a Witch that specializes in defensive tactics, and during the fighting in the opening, we see her tanking lasers with her magic shields while Hugbunny provides fire from behind.

This at least makes me a little more optimistic about the fighting scenes even if it does seem to be leaning more towards CG.

Yes because all the CG in the first seasons and movie was removed right?

Granted I haven't watched it yet but I really have no qualms with the CG utilized in witches. The reason being with the witches it's much easier to scale them in the distant shots so they keep fully on model. If they were drawn they would probably look like disgusting blobs and we'd all be shouting QUALITY instead.

When they announced the Karabuchi sisters I was sceptical at best but so far Hikari seems seems like she'll be enjoyable to watch. I suppose the difference here is she's coming from a flight training school and has something to prove as the younger sister of an ace like Takami. As opposed to Yoshika, who was a prodigy and initially took a hard (and grating) anti-war stance.

I liked the episode, the atmosphere is intact as if it's 2008 all over again. It'll take time to get used to the new cast but I bet it won't take too long (I doubt though that any witch could be better than Erica). Though I alreadt like Hikari much more than Yoshika.
Having a base near St. Petersburg is a nice touch, I'll have fun spotting familiar places. Its a shame that there was very little fanservice because japanese witch wear sukumizu instead of just panties but well, we are going to Europe next episode anyway.
3D was eh but it wasn't too bad either, I didn't focus on it at all. We'll have to wait till the major fight scene.
