Is Gintama a good anime?

I thought it was shitty like most of the popular animu, but then I binged the first 3 seasons when I gave it a chance. So yeah, it's good.

It's pretty good, the first 20 episodes are mostly world/character building though. They are mostly optional but if you watch them they have high payoffs to inside jokes

Yeah. If you don't like it at first, give it a chance or skip forward

If you can look the other way over all the Joshiraku tier Japaneses references all throughout the first 100 episodes, it does get quite good afterwards as it starts referencing itself more instead.

it's one of the best. most shounen crap focuses on action and drama while the comedy is just kind of a cheap add-on, gintama is one of the only series i can think of that manages to focus and prioritize comedy but still have very strong dramatic arcs and moments when the time comes for them.

also tsukuyo is my wife

Some mediocre arcs/one offs, some good, some great. It picked up pace around benizakura/the 60s, both the serious and comedy parts.

To be honest I only like it for the gags because it's seriously one of the funniest anime out there. Whenever it tries to get serious it just feels awkward. Though lots of people seem to like those arcs. Just not for me.

It goes on a winning streak after episode 25 and then slowly gets worse after worst girl Tsukuyo is introduced, with the exception of a couple comedy arcs that were great even after.

Shinpachi is the unfunniest character in the show. All he does is over react, repeat what others say and explain the obvious jokes.

He is particularly annoying though, tsukkomi don't have to yell and they're usually funnier when they're a bit deadpan. Almost all the other Gintama characters act as one occasionally and they're better than him.
