Jesus christ, you have no fucking clue what's actually effective in being a memorable tragedy. Subtlety works better than that sort of thing any day. It was a surprise for the vast majority of us so of course it had more impact.

1. Many anons were quite young when they watched 2003 FMA and first experienced this storyline. The 'net was a smaller place back then and I'm sure it felt very sudden and shocking.
