It was certainly a ballsy move, but the backlash is understandable. In the novel, the only iteration we get to see is the last one, with Kyon having numerous deja vu moments, so expanding out the iterations to show at least eight of them gave us a better sense of frustration that inevitably builds up within Yuki, which is important to understand why she flipped out and made the events of Disappearance happen.

So, thematically, it makes sense and does its job, but the viewers probably would have gotten the hint without all eight episodes. Three would have done fine.

BD sales were good too IIRC

The summer of Endless Eight is still one of my favorite /a/ memories honestly.
