Because Budel literally explained the entire scenario to him in one of the very first chapters of this arc. And like Yunan explained, anybody in Kou who was capable of any trade left the country to other places, only the soldiers were left behind. Alibaba wasn't being some super-genius who had all the answers, it was just a case of him being literally the only semi-competent person in the Kou government since he actually learnt about trade and commerce as a child. Kou was entirely focused on war as the primary source of income for the country, so it makes sense that Royalty from a seaside trading nation would do a better job of monetary tasks than war-oriented people. He also didn't handle everything by himself. That's why he brought in Koumei, to take on the affairs of Kou while he was out negotiating with other countries. He didn't just walk in and snap his fingers and hey presto, Kou is saved. It took months upon months of effort from him, Koumei and Kougyoku to sort things out.

And he has struggled during this period. You even provided an example of it. Sinbad screwed him over because he was too naive and trusted a business rival just because they were familiar on a personal level. The entire teleportation circle plan was scrapped and they instead had to focus on other methods of becoming a successful business.

You seem to be equating Alibaba being competent to being a Gary Stu, which isn't the case at all. Granted, there are one or two examples of a Sue character in the series, but Alibaba isn't one of them.

I just said it was convenient, but convenience doesn't automatically equate to a character being a term that he is not. Like I said, Kou is a war-focused country. It's natural that no one left there would have any idea about how to properly handle being put in a strenuous financial situation. This was thoroughly established. Likewise, it was also established long beforehand that Baba is adept in monetary fields because of his education in a trade-based country. He knows the ropes to that game, Kou does not because they were never concerned with commerce. What doesn't make sense about that?

He went there to find out more about the magic researchers in Kou because all of the records of them had been erased. It's true that Koumei isn't why he originally looked for Kouen, but he is the main thing that caught Alibaba's eye, he even commented about how Koumei reformed many of Balbadd's policies, which shows how adept he is in things like politics. The point still stands that Alibaba wouldn't have gotten as far as he did in his plan without Koumei.


And to your last point, you don't seem to differentiate the two at all. What barometer would you use to determine how Baba can be successful without being a Stu? That's what I want to know.
