Do you believe there is a lack of anime analysis grounded in theoretical and historical roots? Or perhaps there is a lack of translations available for academic Japanese writings on anime. We are severely limited by the language barrier.

There's lack of anime with the story is based on economical and historical circumstances. For example, we see Dougram and the story doesn't contradict the common sense (exept for mechs).
And on the other hand is Gundam Seed with the only reason for conflict being racism of some naturals. The racism in real life has economical and cultural roots and in Seed there are no roots spotted.

Almost everything written in English about anime is garbage. Especially stuff by the likes of Clements and McCarthy. It is all superficial nonsense with glaring errors that even a semi knowledgeable fan can spot with little to no academic legitimacy. "Japanese Animation: East Asian Perspectives" was a decent book though the essays felt scholarly and academic, full of historical knowledge, translated from whichever language they were originally in. "Frames of Anime: Culture and Image-building" was also very good and you can find that in English as a free e-book.
Basically, yeah. Anything to lend the artform more legitemacy in the eyes of cretins if that's what's needed.
I've read Anime from Akira to Howl's Moving Castle: Experiencing Contemporary Japanese Animation
by Susan J. Napier.
Biggest piece of shit I've ever wasted time on. It's basically written by dub/sub turd that clearly doesn't follow the story closely and makes obvious mistakes that would never happen if she had only bothered to do even basic research or confirm with native speakers.
Also, Napier is a feminist so there's that slant as well. It's not nearly as bad as it could have been, but it's obvious enough that you might be annoyed from time to time.

Yeah there is a lot of that kind of thing in almost everything written in English by English speakers. Just stupid inaccuracies that make you question every fact they try to present and make you realise they know little more than you and what you could easily find out with a quick google.
Then there is the "analysis" they try to do of thees facts which is usually extremely superficial mostly only explaining what happens on screen and the plot of the anime in question talking about what they feel it "means" from their perspective rather than actually doing any kind of technical analysis of the creation of the anime, giving historical context of value or doing in depth research or even attempting primary source research. It is all secondary source bullshit written in someones office somewhere that me or you could write just as easily with the help of the internet if we took a bit of time.

Bump.
anime ain't worth the time.
>>147560466
Didn't this thread literally just happen?
>>147561597
Exactly, I an author of such an "analysis" would need to -at least- cite the storyboard, which is more than likely released for any big-name series/movies someone would write a book on. Probably not done because 99% of these faggots can't read it. Even casual 2ch otaku do this. You don't write a fucking book on an anime based on how you "felt," when there's fucking material written directly by the creators telling you how it was supposed to come across rather than your culturally-distorted feelings.

Stop making this thread faggot.
>>147561858
Fuck off back to your own thread then, (You) cancerous shit stain.
>>147561363
Seconded, Napier is unbelievably shit. Who knows how the fuck she got her position in the academy now.
I've found Cavallaro's and Lamarre's stuff really interesting, though.

If you can read Japanese, you're guaranteed to find more and better "analysis" on random Japanese blogs and 2ch than in English material.
If you absolutely don't intend on ever learning Japanese, English resources might not be the worst thing ever for fact based things like history of animation. But I'm pretty sure you can find some sakuga blogs written by more knowledgeable non-academics that will teach you just as well if not better.
fucking artfags
I just want to be fucked while wearing girls clothes. That's all.
