I hate to start a new thread for this, but I just have a quick question.

What are OVAs? IWhere do they stand chronologically? Are they a sequel? Or Parallel bonus stories? Just a sort of fan-service thing with no canon plot?

I've been reading VNs for a few years, and my VNDB played list is around 150. Kind'a running out of stuff, so thought I'd try anime. Just want to make sure I'm getting my plot straight.

I know to love ru isn't exactly 'plot-driven', but noticed in the 1st episode of the 2010 OVA that the ghost girl had a human body and that was never mentioned in the original 2008 TV series.

pic mostly unrelated.
>>
They are chapters from the original source that wasn't adapted in the TV series.

But that doesn't limit to that, for example, Hentai shows are called OVAs.

Original Video Animation. Think of it as "Direct to video". Originally they where Movies, Series, Bonus episodes released only on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Etc... These days OVAs tend to be bonus episodes included in the DVD/BD release of shows.

There are actually a decent number of one-off OVAs that still get made, but no one cares.

Good morning anon.

OVA means "Original Vanilla Action", which means that these kind of episodes aren't biased by the pressure of the capitalist TV chains.
Because of this I would recommend you to stick with the content of these 'OVAs', because they come directly from the Director's heart.

The term OVA doesnt really say anything about this and the answers might be different depending on the source material and the intention of the ova release

If any of you knew what the definition of OVA was, you'd know that googling the definition is impossible. "OVA" is defined differently for pretty much every OVA in existence. To find out what it is, you'd have to google the specific anime OVA you had in mind. Broad definitions fail completely.
>>
>>147468059
OVA literally means direct-to-video animation. There is no further meaning in any sense.
Sometimes TV series get an OVA episode, sometimes you'll get a short OVA adaptation like Corpse Party/Jojo, and sometimes you get original works that are straight-to-video for higher production values like FLCL. All that is extraneous from the definition if OVA, which is literally a self-explanatory name.

Yes, yes, yes, wikipedia says so, and you're not wrong. But that doesn't answer the question of what the OVA means to the series, which is 95% of the definition of OVA that can't be broadly defined.

Everyone knows what cut content and direct to video stuff is, but when they don't specifically tell you where in the chronology the OVA fits, and whether or not it's canon, then you have problems. And most don't. You have to look up the specific OVA to see where it stands and whether or not there's a order you need to watch them in.

For example, this is the to-love-ru OVA watch order apparently -> To LOVE Ru -> OVAS -> Motto To LOVE Ru -> To LOVE RU Darkness OVA - first episode only -> To LOVE Ru Darkness Season One -> To LOVE Ru Darkness OVAs -> To LOVE Ru Darknes Season 2.

If you asked what an OVA was in relation to to-love-ru, and you're told "OVA means direct-to-video animation." ... yeah, that doesn't tell you anything. You can't broadly define OVAs because they're all different. You can only say they were broadcast material.
>>
>>147468679
exactly that was the point. you cant simply google the implications of it
>>

>But that doesn't answer the question of what the OVA means to the series, which is 95% of the definition of OVA that can't be broadly defined.
No, it's not. That's like saying you can't briadly define manga because "some are original, some are spin-offs, and some are based on anime". Again, it's totally extraneous from an actual definition.
In that case, asking for a "definition" is literally impossible.

>>
>>147469120
>If you asked what an OVA was in relation to to-love-ru,
You're asking the wrong question. That's not "what is an OVA", that's "where does the OVA fit in" and has nothing to do with the definition. You're a fucking idiot.
>>
>>147469292
That's a poor explanation. Actual direct to vid movies ARE OVAs. OVA only implies the release and that it's animated, not the content.
>>
>>147469338
>and has nothing to do with the definition
thats the fucking point tho
people should stop saying "hurr, le google it" then
