Well, typically people scan series because they like it or for the glory and attention. Unless the manga is the greatest thing ever, it typically takes a while for a manga to gain popularity.

It takes a while to do scanlation, and to do it well, so there is a pretty big disparity in skill and quality. When you don't get much attention, it is disheartening.

Then you also have people that scanlatoes call "snipers" and they are groups who wait until a series gets popular and then shit out terrible and half assed speedscans. Most scanlators drop the series after it, and now all you have left is a half assed manga speedscan.

TL:DR sniping sucks, and it hurts scanslations.
