I've only seen Chihiro and Howl so those are good.

man, howl was boring. Visually it was great. But the substance was bad. Mononoke is a prime example of having both.

Kiki > Porco > Ponyo >>> Wind Rises > Spirited Away > Etc etc

Something like that, although maybe it'd be better to rank them by 'bands'. Like, I loved Kiki and it is one of my go to comfy films to watch. Others, like Spirited way, I'm eh about.

Porco Rosso = Whisper of the Heart > Laputa = Kiki = Castle of Cagliostro > Ponyo = Nausicaa = Mononokehime > Totoro = Spirited Away > Howl's

Haven't seen The Wind Rises yet. And yes, Miyazaki did work on Whisper of the Heart.

Miyazaki came up with the initial concept, wrote the script and produced/oversaw the movie. Its basically his movie with Kondo being the director. And even then, Miyazaki worked with Kondo on the storyboards so you can count Miyazaki as co director.

I think that if Kondo didn't die Ghibli wouldn't be as dead today. Miyazaki would actually build the studio for lasting after him.

I think so too. Its really sad how Miyazaki's assistants kept dying or leaving Ghibli. Though I can see why Anno left. He really respects Miyazaki, but didn't want to make movies like him. I respect Anno for having the guts to try and make a high end TV show when Miyazaki just gave up on TV entirely.
