The difference between brainwashed and normal Nagito is kind of subtle, aside from the obvious difference of obsessing over despair. Normal Nagito hates despair and believes that it has no place in the world, while brainwashed Nagito is much more concerned with despair's role in making hope. He becomes basically the exact opposite of Junko, because she thinks the best despair is born from a dying hope, while Nagito now believes the best hope is born from a dying despair.

Its funny, before DR3 started I was so looking forwards to Junko breaking down the SDR2 cast, learning more about those tantalizing traumatic backstories and seeing them slowly crumble under the weight of despair. And I thought watching a bunch of literally whos kill each other with no investigations and trials would be boring. And now its reversed.

Instead we got an incredibly predictable sequence of brain washing and Chiaki dying. It feels most egregious with the class exclaiming how Chiaki is their hope... when she didn't do anything. What the fuck did she do to make everyone, even fucking Hiyoko, think that Chiaki sure is swell?

Brainwashing the SDR2 cast also completely robs them of personal responsibility. Its a mind blowing twist when you find out they are the Remnants because you are forced to struggle with the moral dilemma of whether or not their actions are forgivable. Well now the answer is yup, because they literally didn't do anything wrong of their own volition. It was all Junko.

Just a total and complete shame that Kodaka couldn't execute on his original ideas.

Is there any actual way DR3's ending can have catharsis when all three heroines are dead? Everything has been incredibly underwhelming so far, the only thing that'd make me feel somewhat okay with all of it is if they resurrected them. I'd still dislike that they "killed" them off in the first place for shock value, but at least then there'd be a nice ending for the protagonists. Maybe all three protagonists die instead to be reunited with their girls and Mitarai becomes the Ultimate Hope, I don't know, but a DR2-esque ending seems way too optimistic at this point.

I think the biggest flaw of DR3 is the focus on Chisa. If they had ignored all the Chisa shit, we could have had Junko appear a little earlier instead of like halfway through and get maybe at least a half episode for each character being slightly manipulated by her while the rest to SoL hijinks. It could have all been very subtle until the finale, but instead we get Juzo, Chisa, and Munakata wasting our time trying to figure out the Kamakura Izuru Project when instead Hajime should have just been taken at the end of episode 3 and never seen or heard from until the ending. We didn't need all that shit with Ryouta to be in the forefront, nor did we need to see the massacre of the student council (though I won't diminish it, the second half of that episode was fucking spectacular).

I'm not saying DR3 or even Zetsubou-hen has instantly turned into a 0/10 for me, and I applaud the whole "Simultaneous airing and episode overlap" their doing between shows, but it feels like their focusing way too much on the overlap instead of making each show individually great, and when coupled they'd be incredible. But I'm just some idiot fanboy complaining on a Taiwanese Sewing Board, so what does it matter.
