I've got VHS tapes from the 90s that look as good as their DVD counterparts. I think degradation is caused by shitty VCRs isn't it?

It's caused by pour storage, low quality our damaged/worn VCRs, and general wear and tear. Because the tape had to actually be moved through the VCR to be played it's worn just a bit more each time you watch it.

VHS is not a good storage medium and wasn't meant to be long term.
