I never got where people get the "They refer to him as a male/female" from, since everyone just called Pitou just "Pitou", and never used the only gendered pronouns in the Japanese language on him even once.

Japanese doesn't have gender, the only way of gendering someone in casual speech is literally going "lmao ur a man", and the only gendered third person way of referring to someone is using the words Kare/kanojo, which again, are never used on pitou.
