>Most popular mainstream Japanese anime magazine
>Consistently advertises FSS, an ancient manga that modern Otaku don't give a shit about

Why? How would Aniplex and Kadokawa allow a MANGA work that doesn't shill their seasonal anime to have such a prime-time spot?
>>
Are you really so confused about it you felt the need to make a post about it?

Considering Newtype is the #1 anime magazine in Japan, and people here on /a/ pay so much attention to its character popularity polls, yeah, it's fucking bizarre. Advertising an obscure old manga over a bunch of other seasonal anime and movies from big corporate backers? The fuck is going on?
>>
>>147199461
I'll give you a hint. The FSS manga is fucking published in Newtype.
>>
>>147199859
It''s not that obscure, at least compared to some other franchises, and it's still ongoing.

Obviously it's what's happening, why bother wondering why? Clearly it just is.
>>
>>147199859
>and people here on /a/ pay so much attention to its character popularity polls
You mean take the piss out of, surely.
>>
>>147199945
I know that, but why would a manga, and a non-Otaku one at that, be published in an ANIME magazine?

>>147200019
>It''s not that obscure

Compared to all the other shows in Newtype, it's like an ant

>Obviously it's what's happening, why bother wondering why?

Because it's completely out of character for a huge-ass corporation like Aniplex/Kadokawa. Why waste ad space on something that practically no one cares about in the context of its own magazine?

>>147200026
The point is that it's important enough for people here to pay attention too. Its -the- anime magazine.
>>
>>147200260
It's not "out of character." It's explicitly what's happening. It doesn't matter what you think about it, clearly they either like it enough, or whatever other reasons, to put it on the cover. There's nothing to talk about.
>>
Did Nagano's latest anime ever even had bluray release?
I never watched it
>>
>>147200260
It's a lot more popular in Japan than you'd think, and it's been running for an insanely long time. >>147199859 is celebrating its 30th anniversary, in fact.
Newtype is an anime magazine, yes, but it also runs one or two manga series at any given time just because they can. FSS is a major seller and they're going to promote it as hard as they can whenever it's off hiatus (and even sometimes when it's on hiatus, >>147199461 is literally advertising that it's about to come back, not even back yet). The other manga series right now is Akuma no Riddle.
>>
>>147200394
Just because "it's happening" doesn't mean it shouldn't be questioned.
>>
>>147200565
Okay, that clears it up. I don't know anything about FSS but from what I see it doesn't look like typical Otaku pandering like Akuma no Riddle. Do you know why it's run on Newtype magazine of all places though? It looks like it belongs to a different target audience.
>>
>>147200700
You're relying way too hard on your perception of things that you don't know anything about.

Obviously it does belong to this audience. Newtype = Gundam, Nagano worked on Gundam. It's really, really simple.
>>
>>147200848
But Gundam isn't FSS, and comparing Gundam to any other mecha franchise that isn't Macross is laughable. Why don't other Gundam designers get their own spot in the largest anime magazine of Japan then?

You're right, I don't really know anything about why it's there. That's why I made this thread.

>Why don't other Gundam designers get their own spot in the largest anime magazine of Japan then?
Could be any of a number of reasons. They only have one or two manga at a time, so they gave it to him, and he's held that spot for 30 years. Keep in mind that that probably WAS otaku pandering back when it started.
Plus they have a full magazine for Gundam manga, not much point in putting them in Newtype.
>>
>>147200486
No, it only got a limited theatrical release. Apparently he is still working on it and touching up various parts. Don't quote me on this, but I believe that he did much of the work himself, so there isn't much inbetween animation. Also it is meant for 4k. Basically Nagano's crazy vision of the movie is that you have to see it in a theater in 4k.

Nagano is pretty crazy and anti-consmerism. He could license FSS to bamco for plamo kits and make an incredible amount of money (fuck I'd take FSS plamo over gunpla any day of the week), but he hates bamco so much he'll never do it and instead only release LE resin kits. I imagine something similar went on with this movie, he hates the industry so much that he just did it all on his own. I'm still hoping I'll get to see it one day.

FSS is one of the things that made Newtype. It may be old as shit and kind of bad but it's hardly gonna get dumped after all this time.
>>
>>147201269
Actually he finished Gothicmade back in 2012. Since then there have been a few screenings every 6 months or so. Most recent one was back in April of this year I believe. He worked on it with a small staff, but it wasn't a solo project. He had three other key animators, all from Ghibli, and the art director was also from Ghibli. I don't know how much of the movie he animated himself.
>>
>>147199461
you're a fucking faggot kid
>>
>>147205209
>FSS is the epitome of a mecha otaku series

That was and always has been Gundam. FSS exists in its own niche and the mecha are just part of the setting, it doesn't revolve around them like Gundam.
>>
>>147205470
I think it was just a matter of cash. Gothicmade isn't exactly the type of movie that you can pitch to Nip producers and get a green light. So Nagano just made it with his own pocket money and some close talented friends.
>>
>>147201038
>comparing Gundam to any other mecha franchise that isn't Macross is laughable

>>

Gundam doesn't revolve around robots either. Human drama, as shitty as it may be, always played a big role in most Gundam series.
>>
>>147207032
To be fair Kadokawa is one of the largest publishers in all of Japan, and they've published hundreds of more popular manga than FSS.
>>
>>147206295
That's just worse. It's a fucking mecha story, how it isn't getting funding?

>>
>>147207422
They have, but not in Newtype. It makes sense for a specific magazine to advertise its selling points.
>>
>>147207469

>>
>>147199461
>an ancient manga that modern Otaku don't give a shit about
Someone post that Newtype poll from like 2014 with a bunch of FSS and Gothicmade characters against all odds.
>>
>>147208589
He'd just insist that that's not representative or something. The guy clearly has some sort of retardedly warped idea of who otaku are and what they like.
>>
>>147207469
It only had like 2 minutes of mecha action from what I've heard. That may have had something to do with lack of money though.
>>
>>147208692
Pretty sure it's just Aniplex-kun sperging again.
>>
>>147208700
>>147206295
Nagano also has developed some personal complex or something about other people touching his babies. He hates the idea of models now, and he threw a fit when SRW accidentally included an FSS mech (apparently they somehow mixed it up with one of his L-Gaim designs, which they had the rights to include) because he couldn't bear the thought of other robots damaging it, etc. So I think Gothicmade might just have been him being crazy and refusing to work with others.
>>
>>147208820
No, he got angry at the L-Gain incident because it lumped FSS and L-Gain together, and the last thing he wants is Bandai using his franchise. The whole "robots getting hurt" was just something a bunch of people who got butthurt made up after seeing Nagano's LED Mirage joke.
>>
>>147208820
The whole refusing to work with others is also bullshit, considering he once made a novel together with, and Ikuhara is also known as being very hard to work with.
>>
>>147208993
with Ikuhara I mean.
>>
>>147208993
There's always the chance that they just got along as fellow crazy Sailor Moon cosplayers.
>>
What will be released first on BD/DVD, Gothicmade or the Jojo movie?
>>
>>147209165
Well, Gothicmade has the advantage of not having been disowned, so the scale of likeliness probably goes Gothicmade > Phantom Blood > Maze.
>>
>>147200260
maybe you're so used to big companies constantly working off corrupt principles that when one comes in and operates off of different mind set and can publish whatever it wants without worrying about how much money it can make off it that it geniuinley shocks you, not everyone in the world is so greedy and can realize there is value in things that profits can't measure.
>>
>>147199461
cause those robots are bad ass
>>
>>147207225
Nagano is like (I guess is...) one of these musicians who make some style of music and then do something different which polarises fans.

If he were Metallica

L-Gaim -> No Life 'til Leather/Kill 'em All
Early FSS -> Ride the Lightning through to the Black Album
Current FSS designs -> StAnger.
>>
>>147210876
Making money and being profitable has something to do with being corrupt? News to me.
>>
>>147204022

But those Volks/Wave kits are basically expensive statues that requires skill to build and look good, not your typical Bandai actionfiguremodelkits that you can mess around with if you fancy
>>
>>147212506
Bandai kits are like toys compared to pretty much every other plamo company out there.

>>
>>147207236
In most Gundam series, the titular Gundam itself decides the fate of the conflict. In FSS, the Mortar Headds are ultimately symbols, but don't contribute much to the story other than being just a piece of setting, even when they fight. The stuff surrounding them, like Fatima usage and ethics, is where the meat of the story lies.

FSS is the reason Newtype magazine has thrived as long as it has and lived to today. In the 80s and 90s, back when FSS was very popular, it was almost the sole reason people even bought the magazine. Due to a handful of insanely long hiatuses in the early 2000s though, people started to forget about FSS until Nagano revived it with the Gothicmade stuff. So now it's in this awkward state where it's alive again, but no one is really there to see it other than newfags like OP, who don't understand just how big it once was.

>Gainax has had some strange projects in the past, but I think this tops them all.

>One of them was that Nagano had originally planned to direct a 30 minute FSS OVA (he was also music director), animated by Gainax and with "support" from Anno (maybe as a co-director?) in 1988. There would also be a running commentary on various FSS resin kits by Nagano as part of the bonus features. Whole thing was supposed to be sold for 9800 yen.
