There might be more as far as canon, but that covers most of it.

For the other stuff, it's Universe+ the three movies. Tokyo deserves mention for being a deconstruction of the Harem genre, showing how dull Tenchi is alone, and how listless the girls are without him.
The Pretty Sammy stuff can be ignored unless you have a particular boner for Sasami and Mahou Shoujo.
Ai is just garbage built to advertise the town TM is set in and recaps every 25 minutes or so.

Not sure how I missed this thread. I'm really looking forward to this. Part of me wishes it was in more of a thick-lined throwback style, but at least the designs still hold up.

Is there a good resource in terms of supplemental stuff to check out? I've heard a lot of it secondhand, but even now my exposure is mostly from the OVAs themselves. I already know of the stuff in >>147093151 but still need to watch Dual, GXP, and Isekai.

You can dig through fan sites for novel info, and there's a handful of scanned doujins by Kajishima, and the ones about Reia's backstory and Kenshi's upbringing are translated.
Now if only someone will translate the one with world info about Geminar, or the GXP novels.

But Kajishima's been doing it for 20 years, so who knows how much isn't scanned?

Universe is trash. The characters are watered down versions of their ova counterparts. Ryouko's a bitch, Mihoshi's a bumbling retard, and Washu's a wacky scientist.

Everyone always praises it, but Universe is just as bad, if not worse, than Tokyo. It might even be as bad as Ai.

Nah, the woman praying was talking about ow Kenshi is underage. Tokimi showed up and made Kenshi older to get pass the age limit, for the purpose of the demonstration.

Enjoyable and largely self-contained trash, I'd say.
I'm fine with it because it wasn't trying to be the OVA. It has most of the things I'd want out of a TV adventure harem from 1995.

I always wondered why they never went with the histories pre-established into the characters, you can make the series a convergent path off of OVA 1 and leave it at that. They instead stick with these caricatures despite it all.

You do have to agree that a lot of the characters were flanderized, though, if we're talking about objectivity. It's fine to say that Universe had its own strong points, such as the extra characters like Kiyone and more time spent on a space adventure, but I think most people that watched both the OVA and TV series would agree that they watched because they liked the characters.

It's fine if you want to go against the popular opinion, but don't say that the TV series is objectively better than the OVAs.

I'm not an ova hipster on purpose. I watched all 3 ovas, gxp, and ism within a few months, and loved them.

Riding that high I decided to watch Universe. I knew it was an au. I knew it was going to be different, but that didn't matter as long as I got more of the characters. The characters I got were similar, but not the same. Mihoshi went from a ditzy blond to an incompetent idiot, and don't even get me started on Washu.

They only had to get the characters right for me to enjoy it. If they had I would have happily eaten any other shit they gave me, but they didn't. If I had watched this before the ovas I probably would have enjoyed it. If it wasn't related to Tenchi and had completely different characters I probably would have enjoyed. However watching this after finishing the ovas all it did was disappoint me.
