Subaru is literally the opposite of shallow. We see him react to what's happening in the new world in a realistic way, there are multiple dimensions to his character, some of them have been explored and others are still developing. He's not the same as he was before he came here. He's growing and learning from his mistakes, while still maintaining a distance with some of the people he made friends with.

Unlike other Isekai where there is a constant going back between worlds, this is pretty much a fantasy anime where every person dropped in the new world will remain here forever.

Purpose, and that comes from people in this world. Especially from the views of others he thrives on. He wants to have expectations, acknowledgement and is willing to rely on getting that from people. What happened in Japan was basically this:
His dad was an extremely well-liked/influential figure in the community, and Subaru was naturally good at athletics, schoolwork, making friends etc when he was young, which prompted comparisons to his father and inflated his ego. But since he was coasting off talent, he eventually started falling behind. This panicked him because he was becoming less like his (perfect) dad, and he scrambled to find a way to sustain his resemblance.
Subaru's dad is eccentric as fuck in his speech and behaviour, he even does the memeboy pose. Subaru focused on imitating this aspect of his father and progressively did crazier and crazier shit so that he'd stand out as the kid who did cool, exciting stuff nobody else did. His friends couldn't keep up with it and he soon lost them all. When he realised this, he instantly dropped the persona and proceeded through middle school by quietly keeping to himself, ashamed at how he'd failed to match up to his dad.
His high school was somewhat out of town, in an area where his dad's name didn't have any weight. He decided to take the opportunity to make news friends and start over, but instantly flubbed it due to social retardation. He withdrew from his peers out of mortification and started fearing the idea of people having expectations of him, including his family. Eventually he started truanting and it snowballed into hikki.
He resents himself for being inferior to his dad and wants to be disowned, so that he doesn't have to deal with the expectation of being like his father, or sullying his father's presence for being such a disappointment. Unfortunately, his parents are supportive. Also, during all this, he kept up his genki genki act at home. Then he gets isekai'd.

Because in arc 4 we do the past, present future crap trials so that when we see subaru past and learn more about why he doesn't miss his old world
