Miura learned that edge is best served in intervals.
K-On happened
What makes Berserk good? The art? The edge? Because those are the only two notable things I've found in the series so far

>wanting a 25 yo series to be the same from the start
Almost impossible.

>>146975675
The art direction. That's it.
Which is already more than 99% of the garbage out there
>>146975495
This. It's been too comfy for far too long. Guts is going to have to leave all the peace that's been building up behind to finish things with griffith, and when he does it's going to get super edgy. My money is on farnese and serpico dying.
>>146975675
The world building of how the realism and the supernatural works well together and the freedom of the author to do anything he wants.
>>146975495
This.
After watching the latest episode, all I could think was cringe with the Christian hate.
Like, I didn't think it was THAT bad when reading g the manga, but animated it's cringe as fuck.
It's better in smaller dosages.
>>146975437
Do people who shitpost about Berserk even bother reading the manga more than one time? It's alright, even encouraged, to have comedic relief in dark shit.
>>146976087
>Christian hate
Have you read ANY other fantasy manga?
>>146975675
Absolutely nothing. I still don't know why I waited 6 years to get off namek
>>146976260
to be fair seeing a 22 minute episode of a main bad guy going "cuz god lul" is a bit cringier than reading through most examples in manga.
Loli witch and the introduction of the magic mcguffins/berserker armor marks the severe downward spiral of Berserk. Everything past that point is shit. Isidro is also fucking awful but at least the arc he was introduced in was good.
They're both a process which I'm over already so it's kind of hard seeing someone older than me still in that state of mind.
>>146975675
The atmosphere. And it's not like there are many good fantasy manga out there. Hell, there aren't that many good manga in general.
>>146976588
Do you also cringe when you read Nietzsche?
>>146976846
My only complaints are that the loli witch is way too fucking powerful and that there are too many comic relief characters by now
>>146977044
You do have to be at a certain age and mindstate to thoroughly immerse in the series.
I read the new chapters more out of a old habbit than anything. I don't even enjoy the series enough anymore to even bother re-reading previous arcs, so I guess I also grew out of it. I think the first volume is still the best because the series was more of an Evil Dead homage at that point, Golden Age arc was a mistake.
>>146977276
I just think the story went nowhere and watching the life of the guy I emphatized with for having a shit life being way too good for too long is just boring. They should honestly just kill of half of the cast, they're not really doing anything useful or have any meaningful conversations. They're just luggage.

>>146977416
I guess from medieval/fantasy genre, I enjoy Vinland Saga more now than Berserk?
I still read just about everything, but Berserk and Blade of the Immortal were my first, and favorite manga for years upon years.
>>146977545
Well, a lot of Nietzsche works are basically: "fuck Christianity and fuck God".
>>146977599
How is Vinland Saga less childish than Berserk?
If I had to buy this manga,I would've dropped it a decade ago. The manga became absolutely shit once Farnese joined the group. I don't hate Farnese or anything,it was just at that time it turned to shit.
>>146977683
I never said it was more or less. I just don't enjoy Berserk anymore.
>>146975437
Miura got tired. Also the industry has changed since Berserk appeared, moe is now the law and it means that Berserk is an outsider
>>146977740
You said you grow out of it.
>>146977782
Growing out of berserk does not imply that Vinland Saga is more mature than Berserk. Where are you getting this argument from?
I also stated that I enjoyed the Black swordsman arc the best, and that is the least mature, edgefest of an arc that you can get from a series.
>what the fuck happened

>>146978015
Fact is that I don't give a shit about most of them, if they die I won't feel sorry as much as I did for Judeau or even Corkus for fucks sake.
Farny, Serpico and loli are fine but I know I won't care about Isidro, Master and Commander, Magnifag, Isma.
>>146975675
The whole Golden Age arc is one of the best things that happened with manga as a medium.
Literally.
Perfect.
And it goes to complete shit after that.
>>146977863
>Implying that a life of angsty teeth gnashing is better than friends and adventure
Yes, it is. By far. Berserk pre-Trolls was the story of a man forced to become a monster by extreme circumstances, because of his humanity, but also burning his humanity while he is trying to retain it as much as he could (hence Puck's role). That's a compelling story and every reader will empathize with Guts' tragic past and humanity. "Happy friends and adventure" is pretty much monster of the week with none of what I've said before. It still has pros like Miura's art (not sure about that nowadays) and Guts' sheer badassness but it's nothing compared to the brutal authenticity the story had before.
>>146976087
Isn't it Christian lore that the antichrist deceives everyone and makes it appear that he's the messiah?
>>146975675
well yeah the art is fucking amazing
personally not a big fan of how much edge there is but I guess that's a preference
Does Guts suffer from bruxism?
>>146978411
Guts needs an army. Knowing this I'm sort of OK with it. I think there is going to be a big culling soon though. Skellig is the only magic tree left so I expect Griff to invade.
>>146975675
I got swept by the narrative (not the plot itself), mostly during Golden Age. The world building and the character drama tie beautifully with the underlying themes.
>>146977397
Get better reading comprehension.
>>146979294
>every reader will empathize with Guts' tragic past and humanity
What the fuck? What sort of lives do you think we all live?
>>146977750
> moe is now the law and it means that Berserk is an outsider
I suspect you've read like ten manga if you seriously think that.
>>146979912
Not living a horribly tragic life like Guts doesn't mean you can't empathize with him. There's a lot of substance in his joys, angers and sadnesses, they always feel very human. Also, until the Eclipse, Guts' life is kinda shitty but not yet a torture, it helps.
>>146979912
Clearly, lives wherein we learn the meaning of words. As for yourself, the opposite seems to be the case.
Empathy is understanding someone who is not you, ESPECIALLY when their circumstances are drastically different. (Like Guts for instance.)
You can empathize with Guts of even Griffith because you the reader, are allowed to watch them be shaped and in turn shape their environment. You don't have to agree with them necessarily. For instance, Griffith isn't particularly sympathetic in choosing to throw away anything to achieve his goals, but we are shown, to some degree, why he acts this way even if wouldn't do the same thing ourselves.
You already have your (You)
>>146975956
As long as we trade them in for the newest witchbitch model. She is too pure to hang out with Griffith.
>>146980340
Not him, and this is pretty pedantic, but since you mentioned the meaning of words, empathy is about sharing feelings. You can't empathize with someone's tragic past if you have a normal life.
>>146980431
It's Berserk, if their life wasn't shit up to this point everything is just waiting to go to hell.
>>146975675
I actually liked how many themes and stories the manga could handle, I loved the golden age because the characters and motivations were somewhat refreshing. Guts original motive for revenge was some generic shit about his family being killed, it's nice to know that the revised plot was about his trust being completely betrayed by an equally complex character.

>>146977069
I second this. It has a pretty unique feeling for a manga. Feels like an epic in the original sense of the world.
>>146986661
>Why would an author REVEAL his ending?
Miura said in an interview that a long journey like theirs with a bad ending would be pointless or something like that.
>>146975675
I can only speak for myself. I personally enjoy the art and can look past the edginess. Mainly I enjoy the story, the setting and the expansive cast of characters. Also, I guess I enjoy living in suspense because I've been waiting for two years now to see if Casca will be healed (which is a hell of a lot less than many Berserk fans have been waiting but I didn't discover the series until 2014).
I don't think I would have been drawn in to Berserk if it didn't have what I consider to be a touching love story/tragedy. I also really like the sword and sorcery genre. The Golden Age reminded me a lot of some of my favorite Conan comic books.
Lastly, I kinda like how many unexplained mysteries there are in the Berserk universe. After all these years, we really know very little for certain about a number of major characters. That's also probably a giant weakness of the series but it's still kinda cool at the same time.

>Miura: I’d say it’s possible. I used to have the final moves planned out, but lately I’ve been thinking I’d rather figure them out when I come to it, so now it’s hard to say what could happen. Being the sort of person I am, though, I actually don’t think I could let such a long grim story end with a grim ending — like, say, having him suddenly die. I don’t really like that kind of entertainment. I’ll leave it to my subconscious.
So Guts will win and survive at least. Everyone else could die.
Honestly I'm expecting more and more with each chapter that Griff will attack Skellig because it has the only soul tree left. I'm expecting MC deaths, maybe even Casca just as her mind is fixed.
