There are plenty of rolls vs con, like poison for example.
Depending on the edition, even spell-casting can depend on constitution rolls (to check if you get interrupted). You may also get regeneration.
Losing your familiar with drop your con by 1 permanently so planning for con 16 would leave you at 15 and thus at a very real HP disadvantage.

Finally, some spells can unlock the warrior con HP tables.

Thinking con stops at 16 is just short sighted.

Around the turn of the millenium, a German publisher called Heyne shat out tons of books revolving around individual fantasy races in the wake of the LotR-trilogy hype.

One those books were a series called "Elves" and was about a northman getting spirited away to the Elvenqueen's court to make a bargain where her finest warriors would accompany him to kill a demon in his own world in exchange for his firstborn son.

They kill the demon, but the demon planned that and from that point onward a lot of JUST AS PLANNED and Elvish badassery happens.

Out of all the books that came out, that series was the absolute best, with "Trolls" coming second and "Dwarves" being so promising but ultimately disappointing.

So far I'm actually building my own setting where all the fantasy races are actually some form of "Elf". If properly employed, elves are the fucking best fantasy race there is, but popular media has ruined them and lots of modern fantasynerds only know this botched version of them.

My headcanon has tolkien-orcs just really, really savage elves with warpaint and pronounced canines.

Weebelves are delicious fapmaterial that soothes my aching soul every night from the suffocating loneliness.

It became very convoluted towards the end, yes. The sequels to the series helped straighten things out, but by the time I read them I had already forgotten most of the info that they referenced.

I simply remember them being well written, well researched and very engaging in that elves, trolls and all other assorted magical folk didn't feel like player-races that had to be ticked off on the checklist.

Dwarves became disappointing in exactly that respect, as well as suddenly pulling a Glorantha and trying to reinvent fantasy races by adding incredibly irrelevant features to create off-shoot races that existed only outside the Geborgenes Land.

Also the protagonist edging it up was the final nail in the coffin.

"Dwarves" is getting a vidya, btw. Looks like it's going to have a Drakensang vibe. Also fucking Blind Guardian did a song about it.
