If he revealed the basements content earlier in the series, we'd all be mindblown. The thing is, whenever there are mysteries in a series, it's up to the writer to ensure that the buildup is proportional to the revelation.

I remember that, in the early days of the series, there was this 'holy shit' factor, where there was a sense of constant escalation. The series lost that now as we gotten used to the circumstances and the plot armour had a chance to show through.

Eren and Mikasa are needed because one, Eren is a titan that holds the greatest power in the world and has hardening abilities. Hardening that can help them make more weapons, like the guillotine. Doubtful. There's a reason the CT was needed to breach the outer wall (at its weakest point), while AT has only been shown to be able to destroy an inner (manmade) gate. Then there’s Kenny. When Rod told him only a Reiss could inherit Uri’s memories, you can literally see the exact moment it dawns on Kenny and his face darkens. It never occurred to me the first time I read that, but that was the very moment Kenny lost his will to live, and it’s illustrated so clearly on-panel.
