Could someone explain to me what
>失われたアーク的なサムシングだよ
means?
Specifically
>アーク的
I don't have a clue of what that means even after using rikai and googling it. I thought it'd be "arch enemy" at first but I can't see how either.

Context is she's about to get dildo'd and thus loose her virginity.
>>
My problem with anki is that it's not learning vocab. It's learning the kanji for the vocab. If I could hear the pronunciation for the word I'd know what it was but instead I have to look at some bullshit and guess how it is read.

also, did I write correctly this last sentence?
>>
>>146880518
I have been doing Anki for a couple of weeks now and I have gone through Tae Kim's grammar guide. I don't know what else to do now besides my daily anki, since I downloaded Yotsuba and found myself struggling to get past the first chapter. Should I just keep doing anki until I get to 1000 words and then try again with Yotsuba?
>>
>>146880917
>いやその前に手に人って字を・・・アレ何回書くんだっけか
"Well a while ago I wrote the 人 character by hand a bunch of t-... uhm uh? how many times did I write it already..."

"a bunch of -t" isn't a translation here, I just added it for reading comprehension.
>>
>>146880917
>>146881042
I could provide a better explanation with more context by the way. Now that I think about it, it probably means "before this you write 人... uh... how many times already"; she's explaining a ritual or something? In the future don't cut context please.

The only thing you can do to fight laziness is form habits and just make the rational decision to do the goddamn work. Worst case scenario, you barely do any new anki cards and have to wait years before you're good. If you learn 5 kanji-vocabulary a day, you'll know 3,000 kanji in less than 2 years, and would have barely spent time studying. Obviously this is suboptimal but you can be a lazy shit and still do it.

Another thing would be to force yourself to read manga in Japanese. That's what I'm trying to do and it's ridiculously helpful. Reading practice is the most important thing to do while learning Japanese. If you do nothing but anki for 100 years you will never learn Japanese. Try reading a single chapter or something a day and build up as time goes on. Do *not* rely on motivation. Just make a schedule and stick with it. If you can't do that, sorry, but you really can't learn Japanese.
>>
>>146883647
To be honest it's obvious you're a beginner simply judging by how careful you still seem to be writing, i.e. you don't have your own handwriting signature yet, it looks forced and unnatural.

But it's good, keep it up anon.

It would work for understanding the meaning of the sentence, but translators always take liberties, so you shouldn't rely on it too much. Also fan translations are hit and miss when it comes to how accurate they actually are, but Yotsuba should be fine in that regard I hope.

Get the yotsuba reading pack, more useful than side by side imo, as translators can be occasionally liberal at best and just plain making shit up at worst. It might help to get the gist of a scenario if you're really lost, though.

Look, here's my story :

I was exactly like you, "wow fuck Katakana, I want to jump into the fun stuff already". So I just skimmed through them and thought I'd just learn them on the go.

Well I sort of ended up learning them on the go, but still had difficulties telling a few of them apart a year or go into my studies, and if you'd ask me to write them I couldn't fucking do it although I had already learned hundreds of Kanji by them. So I had to fucking re-learn Katakana correctly after a while.

Get it? It's fucking nothing, do that now and be at peace forever, you moron.
>>
>>146888255
It is possible (although not recommended) to learn grammar, kanji and vocab without knowing katakana, however you'll have to learn it eventually nonetheless.
More importantly, if you don't fix your attitude and stop being a lazy cunt, you can't learn Japanese.

>>
>>146890886
殺し can be a noun in some cases but strictly speaking it's the 連用形 of 殺す—the continuative form.

One function of the continuative form is to link two clauses, like the て-form does. So 素敵な彼女を殺し is like "Kill wonderful girlfriend and..."

We expect there to be more information after the verb, because it's not in its normal sentence-final form 殺す.

As soon as you learn the katakana you get the instant reward of being able to read thousands of silly english loanwords and poorly transliterated foreign words and names. There will never be another time in all of your Japanese studies where you will achieve so much with so little effort. Some of the katakana double up as kanji as well, so that's even more shit that you can get for free.

You need to understand the structure of japanese sentences and particles. First, everything before a noun modifies that noun. Ex. 神に憧れた人の成果て. 神に憧れた is what's modifying 人の成果て.

の is a possessive. "yのx" is roughly the same as "y's x", Unless you're treating it as a sort of description, which is a bit different.

What you wrote is "You're a person's big". Doesn't make much sense, does it?

Thanks, this is quite helpful. I just started reading Japanese the manga way a couple days ago and it's my first attempt at understanding grammar.

Check the Cornucopia, should be there? The title is written in romaji / english instead, though.
>>
>>146896625
>First, everything before a noun modifies that noun.

Can you expand on more shit like this. If the entire clause modifies the noun, how are particles such as に meant to be translated?

A transliteration goes something like:
(God に longed for) man の reduced
>>
>>146896892
Yeah, that description works for a while, but の isn't that simple. If you start thinking of it as a particle that denotes possession, you'll have an easier time later on.
>>
>>146897000
Wow, everything is so organized now. Should have read the OP, as usual. Thanks.
>>
>>146897006
Not that guy, but
>神に憧れた人

Anybody know a good place to watch Japanese news or just TV in general? I have tried https://terebi.tzn.re/ but it lags horribly and I can barely even watch anything. It doesn't necessarily have to be a live stream, maybe just the name of a news program or talk show with episodes I could look up on youtube would be good too.
>>
>>146897824
i watch nhk on sbs, dunno if it works outside of aus

http://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/search/japanese
>>
>>146897006
The the entire clause doesn't modify the noun. 神に憧れた. "Longed for god," is like a relative clause to 人(Person), or 人の成果て("what used to be a person").

So you have
>[神に憧れた]¹[人の成果て]²
that translates to
>[What used to be a person]²[who longed for God]¹.
>>
>>146897941
So the verb conjugation for 憧れる distinguishes 神に憧れた as a relative clause?
>>
>>146897870

Okay so I am glad I managed to hustle and make my self imposed deadline of Sep 1st, so yay on that... but still being here I just realize how much more I have to learn and it's a bit less exciting than when I started and thought that by the end of genki2 I'll be chatting with ease in Japanese and able to watch movies with out subtitles (I was naive! Though I can catch enough to get an idea of what is going on... but miss most of the nuances). Anyway just having a moment where I am realizing how much there is to learn. Next up an advanced intermediate class which will be all in Japanese so am a bit terrified (listening is not my strong point), so here is hoping I can keep up. Anyway anyone else feel slightly let down when they reach what should be exciting milestones? Oh and I got Intermediate Japanese because my class will be using it... any opinions on it?

I'm getting depressed, I can't read shit.

Tried Hanahira, took me ages to get any sense out of the sentences and it's still just a wild guess most of the time, rather than actually knowing what it means.

Yotsubato is pretty much the same thing, I mean there is the reading guide but I feel like I don't make any progress and I have to look up fucking everything.

It's no fucking fun, I hate it.

Just did Tae Kim and Anki until now, maybe I should go through Genki or something like that to get better at actually using the language?
>>
How long does it take to learn Japanese to the highest level possible?
>>
>>146910516
You will never be able to read comfortably just by doing Anki and reading grammar guides. You need to read. Even easy content will seem difficult at first, but that's just how it is. Instead of asking DJT for advice, you should go back to Yotsuba and force yourself to finish it.
>>
>>146910516
i was like that not long ago, just keep going and bookmark this
http://core6000.neocities.org/dojg/
yotsuba is probably better to start on than hanahira because a lot of whats going on is illustrated better, the downside of yotsuba being harder to lookup unknown words without an OCR

Everyone feels like that when they read something in Japanese for the first time, it's supposed to feel impossible, I felt the exact same way you do like a year and a half ago when I tried to read through yotsuba and hanahira, and now I could read both of those without having to look up a single word

I think the important thing is just not getting demotivated, there's nothing you can do other than just struggle through shit until you slowly get better and better, so just try to take comfort in knowing that it's supposed to feel like that, and that you have to just keep pushing through
>>

>yotsuba being harder to lookup unknown words without an OCR
how so? i mean it has furigana for everything but the most basic of kanji
>>
>>146910666
often the furigana font in my copy was barely legible and id just formed a habit of using capture2text bound to a mouse button anyway

i was searching for an android emulator that has a working 'camera' to use googles ocr, nothing else is that good with crappy handwriting(the guide says as much for handwriting them) but somewhere through the middle of yotsuba they became easier to read.. somehow

maybe the context was tipping me off too much

Try to do things like you learned at school
give yourself an achievable goal, say 1 chapter a day or even a few pages.

Take those few pages and then write some test questions and try to answer them about the topic of those pages, highlight any tricky words and explain all the grammatical structures.

I picked up a copy of a novel I found in a charity shop, I am trying make sure I understand by typing it out and checking my comprehension.

Alright so like, as an example, is
私はあなたを大好き
or
私あなた大好き

more grammatically correct?
>>
>>146911023
Both are "correct" but you'd probably use 私はあなたのことが大好きだ in formal writing.

>>
>>146911023

This is clearly a brain problem, not a software problem. If you can't focus on studying, how is changing the software going to fix that? Even if anki somehow WAS the problem, it's so customizable (if you're not a lazy shit) that I can't think of what it can't do that memrise would do better? If you need social validation join fucking reddit or something.

Focusing: Load up a "study music" or "ambiance" playlist on youtube, settle yourself down at your desk so you're comfortable and won't have to get up for at least half an hour. That means pissing / getting coffee / tea / eating something with carbs beforehand. Make sure it's not too hot, too noisy (mask it with white noise if you must), too bright, turn phone notifications off etc. etc. Don't get distracted by outside things.

Consider doing prestudy OUTSIDE of anki if you're not absorbing new words, or increase the amount of steps you have on learning phase & possibly lowering the starting ease.
>>
>>146912657
Translation is a skill in of itself, separate from knowing either language.

It IS very related to your english writing ability, so perhaps you should brush up on that first?

Alternatively consider looking up the blogs of translators and what books they recommend.
>>
>>146913329
Memrise requires me to solve simple problems, multiple choice, type the word, sound recognition.

You can make it so you have to enter the answer into anki. But either way unless you really have no self control and show the answer without actually thinking of what the word is then they're pretty much the same thing except you have to do more shit so it takes longer in memrise
>>
When in the guide they say you can start read native material after the 2K mark, it means 2K reviews in the Anki stats or something else?
Because in Anki stats I learned 1104 kanji but in the kanji grid I get only 500, so I need to learn 900 more or 1500 more before start reading?
which is best?
>>
>>146913497
All of those activities still boil down to "look at this and don't forget it" just with more bullshit added. Anki can also do most of those things (not multiple choice) if you make the card types for them, read the manual.

If it REALLY helps you learn, go for it, it will take longer though. It's adding far more time to an already incredibly time consuming activity.

I suggest using a site like memorangapp.com where it is easy to import a list of words via excel sheet. I use it occasionally when my leeches have piled up and I need to really drill them.

I highly recommend sticking with anki though, because in the long term, you want an SRS that is reliable, even without internet access. Tying yourself to any particular website could get annoying pretty quickly, and there are so many tools available to easily add cards to anki you'd be a fool to not take advantage of them.
>>
Is Japanese syntax more flexible than that of English? And does it contain diminutives for nouns (like piglet in English)?
>>
>>146913624
dat オ tho
>>
>>146913639
It means around ~2000 vocab words known overall (not including silly katakana loan words). Depending on what the words actually are, it could be far more or far less than 1104 kanji.

Basically, just build up some semblance of a basic vocabulary before you start. It just helps to reduce some of the excessive amount of lookups you'll have to do when starting.
>>
>>146914382

If you have the time, read sooner rather than later.

The only reason it suggests not reading straight away is that it would be too painful looking up literally every word. 2k is more than enough to get started, and putting it off will just gimp your grammar abilities.

The problem with translation is that you have to have a fully functional understanding of the Japanese language, and be skilled writer in your own native language.

I'm guessing you translate on the fly, in your head, as you're reading, and that's why you're stuck reusing the same sentences.

You should take some trusted scanlations and see how others translated it. Hell, even looking at bad translations can help, because you'll get so annoyed that you'll force yourself to think about how you'd translate it instead.
>>
>>146913248

She told she next week she would going to Tokyo with her boyfriend and she asked me why I wanted to learn Japanese.

She was a little put off by the anime character which I changed to aizu-wakamatsu station image saying an english friend sent me the image.

She was constantly saying my Japanese was better than her own english.

To be honest, I didn't think I would even be able to hold conversation but despite the awkward moments with pauses she still said I understood surprisingly well.

I sincerely though my comprehension was so low it wouldn't help.

4 months in is not enough to take the JCAT. Should have waited until I hit 6 months and at least have 1 VN read (besides Hanahira).

Core 2k has some ku-form adjectives and pre-masu verbs as separate words, so I guess it depends how you define "new".

"I want to be alone."

Otherwise cool. Perhaps you even meant that he wants to be helps alone by your sentence, but you don't have to stick se much to unnatural-sounding literal translations then. Use English that sounds like English.
>>
>>146925841
I'm an ESL so unnatural english it is. And I was unsure whether that alone thing 'cause I thought that was what ふたりで implied. I guess it depends on the situation, as always

ふたりで is -> together (with one more person).
I.e. two people together.

>床に押し倒しちゃうのもなんだしな。

What is the「__のもなんだし」structure? Couldn't find anything I understood on google.
>>
>>146927497
の makes a noun out of the previous verb
も is just も, either with its meaning of "too" or "even" or just 詠嘆, you need understand it from context
なんだ is just なんだ, as in "What the fuck!", perhaps less vulgar
し and な are just し and な you put at the end of sentences

Context is necessary here to make a proper translation.

That 何だ can ultimately mean many things, depending on the speaker's tone of voice and other circumstances. Both "what the fuck" and "what's nothing" could be possible, first said in angry tone, second in slow reassuring one.

Better than what I have by miles but also doesn't seem quite right. Lines after it kind of make that translation not seem quite right.

For instance, 落ちていく獣の道へと 現世は遠い日々の渇望

Also listening to it again it's not 現(げん)の夢 but 現つ(うつつ)の夢. So not the "present dream" but "reality's dream." Not sure how it changes your translation, if it does.
