Mami is the weird case, I think. It would be odd for her to not have any contact with her extended family. The fact that she is alone makes me question where they were. Kyouko too but she probably just sought out to be a loner and never even contacted her extended family.

At the end of the TV series, she clinged on to the image of Madoka to give her the strength to fight on; she thought that she had to fight in order for Madoka's sacrifice not to be in vain. She'd consider it the greatest of all sins to disgrace Madoka. At least that's what she says.

In the flower field scene, she learns how much it pained Madoka to leave behind those she cared for. People often claim that it's a misunderstanding thanks to Madoka lacking her memories. I disagree with that; I think it's meant to show the gulf between their beliefs rather than as people. Madoka represents self-sacrificing selflessness and Homura represents selfishness. By calling Homura selfish, I don't mean she's self-centered; her desire is for Madoka to be happy, not herself.

You could view Homura as having 3 phases. The weak and useless Moemura that keeps getting saved by Madoka, the battle-hardened yet failure Hommando and Homucifer who finally succeeds. At the end of the flower field scene, Madoka attempts to braid Homura's hair, but Homura rejects it. She doesn't want to be saved by Madoka. What she wants is to save Madoka. During her witch transformation, she also rejects Hommando, who was a failure.

There's also the whole Nutcracker symbolism. Homulilly is the broken nutcracker. This represents how Homura considers it her duty to protect Madoka. If she can't do that, she's useless and a failure. However, when the final Clara Doll, Love, arrives, the broken Nutcracker is finally complete, and she finally succeeds at her mission to protect Madoka. In the end, she does defy Madoka's wishes for her own. Madoka wishes to sacrifice herself for the world, but Homura values Madoka over anything else in the world. The entirety of Rebellion is Homura coming to terms with her own selfishness and her own desires. She no longer works simply to uphold Madoka's morals. By the end of Rebellion, Homura is her own master. If the TV series was Madoka's ending, Rebellion is Homura's ending.

There's an absolute shitton of symbolism and subtleties in Rebellion, so there's a lot I didn't mention. But if you read just a little bit below the surface, Rebellion is very consistent in its themes.

You can't reduce the series to purely philosophical views. It's a problem this fan base has.

Madoka asks Homura to do 2 things before asking Homura to kill her: save her from Kyubey and to save her from herself. Madoka then gives Homura 3 different answers to the question of if she will be okay with losing her existence.

1. End of series: I'm okay because now I know everything you've done for me.
2. Flower field: I'd never want to leave you or anyone else.
3. Breaking the rules for selfish reasons is probably wrong.

The first answer is the correct one. Madoka is happy with her wish because in her own words, she was able to see beyond time and it allowed her to understand Homura.

The second answer takes place in a time when Homura was broken in all aspects. Homura was desperate for validation in her pointless and while Madoka had tried to her, she inadvertantly told Homura that she fucked up. Now believing that she broke that promise, she tried to correct it by doing the ai yo thing. This was the invalid answer because she doesn't have her memories.

The third answer comes when Homura vaguely asked a brain washed Madoka if she prefers order or would break the rules for her own desire. The answer is order. This is mostly invalid because it's too vague to gauge anything from. Hokura once again asked a Madoka without recollection because she once again wanted validation with her actions. As long as Madoka's power is sealed, she'll never get correct answer because literally no one but Madokami understands her.

And the problem is, even if it is the closest one to an accurate assessment of Madoka's situation at the time, it still falls short when one considers that what Madoka thinks is okay for her, or rather, what little is enough to leave her satisfied with her (un)life; versus what actually is okay for her.

Don't forget that moments before the space hug Madoka was reaffirming she was okay with and had no reservations over taking on a fate worse than death as a burden for herself like others described. Madoka from the beggining always had self worth issues, but she could feel at peace if she could circumvent that by helping other people. Which ultimately means that people around her are more important than herself in her eyes even if at times some self preservation instincts kicked in and roped her away from being too reckless, like at the time when she reconsidered her wish of becoming a MG for the mere sake of it after Mami getting chomped.

All of the answers have some degree of truth but not one of them is entirely correct. Madoka says she is okay when she objectively isn't and tries to justify it with a silver lining that was made possible because of her decision. The ideal answer would entail her getting some self worth but Butcher can't go around handing that sort of thing on a platter, not to mention it would most likely quickly turn into a more boring and less interesting story to just make people change like that. Not to mention, which by this stage with all the episodes and screentime on the rearview would require way more than a single movie's time to conveniently justify these sort of massive characterization changes/growth.

Sure, but I don't think that scene can be reduced to just a misunderstanding. Homura is completely aware of Madoka's selfless nature. Madoka will be "okay" with sacrificing herself, no matter how much it pains her.

By the end of Rebellion, Homura's purpose is no longer to protect Madoka's wishes, but her own. Madoka's wish is to sacrifice herself and Homura's wish is for Madoka to be happy. They're conflicting, and Homura chose her own wish over Madoka's. She's completely aware that she's going against Madoka's wishes.

Kyouko and Sayaka seem to me the "opposites" of mental disorders. Kyouko is anxiety, the feeling of disdain for others, narcisism. She eats all the time, she loves fighting, and can't be bothered with the well being of others. Sayaka is depressive, needs the attention of people around her and, while she does want people to recognize her for what she sacrifices, she also feels like shit - so it's the ambiguous feeling between "I feel like I'm working hard a lot and should be well seen for that, but I'm also a piece of shit, so it's not like I'm doing anything worth of noticing".
