Tragic, depressed, mentally ill, etc. characters are really difficult to write. If he writes another gruesome story, I hope he can learn how to write these characters and break his fans' hearts properly--stomp them into sad little chunks of meat.

Personally, I still think the characters--all of them--can be redeemed. Their thought processes are a good start. Characters who think in their head often live in their head, so there's that. Characters like Eren who are more emotional and out there can be shown in their actions/facial expressions how they feel and what they're thinking if illustrated well.

I don't think it's just an issue of skill - I think the story he's trying to tell is too broad for a limited run manga format. It worked well when he was focusing only on Eren and the others were supporting characters, but in recent arcs, a ton of other characters have stepped forward to become important. Trying to contain all their character arcs in a 25-ish volume run, 45 pages a chapter, is incredibly confining. He does a good job stretching these limitations a bit by conveying complex emotions in single panels (something a lot of other manga series fail at), but there's no room for a lot of the important side or filler info. He's committed to restricting the chapters to plot-relevant details.

I feel like he started the manga thinking he was telling a plot-driven story, but due to his inexperience, discovered along the way that he's telling a character-driven story instead. And that story's too big for the format he has chosen.

Castle Utgard was blatantly named after the stronghold in Jotunheim where Utgard-Loki, a beastly, ape-like being resides and tests Thor and Loki with their skill. Ymir is, well, it's pretty obvious that Ymir's backstory will probably be similar to NM Ymir, the proto jotun. Then the walls that surround Asgard being built by a jotun (who was then killed because the gods are cunts who refused to pay).

There's also Annie's similarities with Skadi, the jotun goddess of ice, snow, and skiing, who came to seek revenge for her father after he was killed because he stole Idunna's apples, which are basically fountains of youth. She wreaked havoc on Asgard and her general personality is similar to Annie, too. The only problem is she marries (albeit very temporarily) the Vanir god of muh ocean and muh knowledge, Njord. But they have a shit marriage and break up so AA not confirmed endgame, hopefully.
