He probably just wanted an "alien" because Diamond is Unbreakable wasn't "planned all along" like the first three parts were. At that point, he started taking a lot of inspiration from Dragon Ball as is quite easily evidenced throughout that part. Mikitaka looks pretty similar to some Dragon Ball characters like the Supreme Kai.
He then probably thought, "Would it be too convoluted to have an alien show up out of nowhere and have it not be a big deal?" So it's really ambiguous. Although, the fact that he never shows his spaceship or other alien technology, his ostentatious necklace and the fact that his mom looks just like him, probably hints at the fact that he's just a kid fucking with them, and he really likes alien shit.
I wouldn't be surprised if something came out around that time period with a character who could shapeshift into objects and got into all sorts of hijinks with it, but I can't actually say for sure.

The best part about Mikitaka is that it's entirely possible that he was actually an alien, and it's equally possible that he was just some dude with a Stand fucking around and pretending to be an alien. That's why he's fun.
