Nothing is too low brow for Nagai.

Once you read Devilman, you won't be able to stop seeing parallels or similarities in future manga/anime. It may look like an outdated story whose pace is too fast now, but it had a huge impact on a lot of people back then. Lots of mangaka were inspired by this manga - Berserk's Kentaro Miura being a great example.

Before you go on, I should let you know that there are two scanlations of Devilman. The one you posted has these extra pages, but the translation is pretty bad.

I suggest you get the one from dynamic pro scanlations blog.

I have the blackbox edition (french), and shin devilman is literally the third volume. it also has all the extra additional pages making the final fight a little longer, and other changes as well.

But these scenes of Ryo and Akira talking about a frightening inheritance, Ryo having a gun, etc. put you on edge. It's a great mystery atmosphere.

I always had something against Devilman. The fact of demons being the central characters and killing angels always rubbed me the wrong way, maybe because of my catholic upbringing.
