This wasn't a bad way to spend roughly 5 hours. I thought the entirely ground-based mech battles were actually well done, and enjoyed seeing a focus on melee combat rather than ranged warfare.
The story suffered a bit as the episodes went on, it seemed they crammed a lot into less than 6 hours.
But the concept for the series is actually pretty solid. I glanced at the manga, but it's not really doing it for me. For some reason I just can't get into mech battles that aren't animated. The mechs look clunky, and just a bit shitty in black and white.
Hopefully once the manga gets farther along, they give this a proper adaptation or a new series of movies.

IIRC the TV series cuts some things but added Girge's fight and one or two other things. It also cuts the god tier OP.
Basically, watch the movies and episode 10 (I think) of the series. Also, from this scene onward it's anime original so if you want to read the manga after that you'll have to find whatever chapter this part is at.

Is Girge developed more in the manga? In the films he was pretty cool, damn near peerless as a pilot, but they never really explained his motivations or anything. They kind of touched on how he was able to calculate things, but that's it. I got the impression he had no filter or something, and could process data quickly which allowed him to calculate his enemies weak points, etc... but this left him with a fragile psyche for some reason.
