I noticed another big difference between 1st and 2nd cour. Song usage. Every song from 1st album had its "big moment" in anime where it was heavily highlighted and played for an extended period of time. Ikenai will be always associated with craziness of the 1st episode, Bokura no Senjou - with Freyja inspiring Hayate during his first test, Cosmic Movement - with big concert in episode 4, Walkure Attack - with their operation in asteroid field in episode 6, etc etc etc.
But it's not the case in 2nd cour. So far we had only 2 real song highlights - God Bless You in episode 16 and Hametsu no Junjou in episode 18. That's fucking it. OP2 and Wind Blows were never used as insert songs. We got like 30 seconds of Hear the Universe and Makina's song playing in background so no one has any idea what's their full version is like. We didn't even get full verse + chorus for Walkure flashback song too and the whole scene was pretty uninspiring. Freyja didn't even sing properly for Absolute 5.

Also majority of the songs in 1st cour were played several times so viewer can get used them and appreciate it. But they didn't repeat shit in the 2nd cour and actually reuse songs from the 1st album. I wouldn't be surprised if final song is Ikenai Borderline or Walkure Attack again.

I can't remember any other anime which was fucked up so much by retarded late production decision.

At this point, piloting is clearly an extremely minor part of the show compared to past Macross series. This was never a war that was going to be settled by piloting skill.

The hint is that the story began with a battle concert. The pilots are just the backups of the singers. The ending of this show would likely involve a sing-off of Freyja taking centre stage, leading all the other singers and have a battle of songs against berserker Mikumo.

Mirage seemed to matter so little because she never mattered. If this had been a more combat-oriented show then it could have been, but as it is she is just support. I just wish they hadn't bothered to make her a Jenius.

I was expecting Mirage to be a relevant pilot like Gamlin where he from a mediocre pilot to an actual elite by the end of the series but it turns out otherwise. Come to think of it, the only thing that pretty much changed with the Knights was that we got to know more about them with each episode. In the beginning they were so intriguing because they were unknown. Some ace pilots coming out of nowhere and fucking shit up, again and again? Some unknown face declaring war on them? This made the whole scenery awesome. Now that we learn about them is okay since the main cast is on their planet finally. But they could have been left in mystery up until that point. It still worked good with Berger, we still don't know what his deal is. No backstories or long screentimes for him. He came in to Chaos, knew everything, and silently fucked off. That was great and should have been the case with Windermere.
