Why is a non anime the best anime of the season?

What part of 3dpd don't you understand?
>>146790334
the 3dpd part. Sorry, I'm not familiar with your autismal made up acronyms.
>>146790169
Because every puppet is best puppet.
>>146790169
What is the name? I dont know where ive seen it before bug i have
It's fucking ridiculous. Why is it so good. Why Butcher won't make more shit like this, but actually animated
What the fuck
>>146791045
>>146791045
the character designs and manga art suck compared to the actual aspect of the puppets.
Puppet Kei Gai >>>>> drawn Kei Gai, for instance.
Now, if the art was true to the aspect of the puppets, then it'd be worth a try.
>>146790955
Thunderbolt Fantasy.
>>146791583
Cheers!
Why do all the bad guys have fabulous hair
Yeah, its really one of the more interesting projects this year. I like everything abot this thing - the chinese influnces, the puppeteer stuntwork, and most of the compact plot that just doesn't stop, keeping in line with the whole "epic" (in term of chinese epics, not memes) tone it has to it.
It's really, really neat.
To bad my main homo had to die.
But it's just generic, entry-level wuxia.
>>146791758
it's the 80s.
everyone is fabulous
>>146792015
Screaming Phoenix Killer was best boy and there's a lot of competition. I really liked his fishnet mask, very Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
>>146792098
yes but it's beautiful
>>146792098
It's less wuxia and a more a hybrid of your typical DnD quests that Japan loves with Wuxia elements and a bunch of Urobuchisms,
Puppets are not anime.
>>146792304
They are now

he can do a kamehameha so yeah

Or hes a super villain trying to be a good guy.
>>146791254
Nah the concept arts are fucking fantastic
A shame for the manga though.
>>146791045
The puppets actually keep butcher's bad habits in line. He tweeted that since you can't have long shots with the puppets (because then they start looking lifeless and stupid), he has to keep their lines short.
In other words, butcher's absolutely terrible habit of going into long pointless and convulsed rambles are replaced by stuff like "-but never regret trying to the right thing."
>>146792800
the concept arts are boring millenial shit
>>146792851
Interesting
So that may be also why the pacing of each episode is so good
>>146792997
>shitting on Nitro+ designs

>>146793097
>It's a "Tsuji Santa is the character designer" episode
>It's a "Makoto Ishiwata is the mechanical designer" episode
Namaniku ATK has been pretty hit or miss for a while. Certainly peaked around 2009 or 2010.
>>146793891
That scene was paced so well though, in terms of dialogue between the both of them. Never a dull moment because it explores two characters that the audience barely has any info on.
They eventually almost did lead to a full fledge flight between the two.
>>146792132
The Arslan OVA is 90s you fucking hack.

What does this even mean? The character designs look like they were drawn by someone under 40?
>>146794781
yes
>>146795689
You look like you were drawn by someone under 40.
Jesus fuck, I just watched the first episode and that was some of the hypest shit I've ever see. Chinese transliteration is FUCKED though, I don't know who came up with those spellings, but they are the opposite of phonetic.
>>146796379
ching chong motherfucker
I remember they used to air another puppet action show from Taiwan years ago on Cartoon Network that I thought it was cool. Think it was called Wuxia Warriors, I really liked it but it was cancelled within a few weeks. Did the same people who did that also doing this one?
>>146796379
Those are the mandarin pinyin transliterations of the names and terms used.
>>146797666
Wu Lin Warriors and, yeah, they're doing Thunderbolt Fantasy.
Question. Did he always carry a piece of crap with him or did he hide his sword somewhere?
>>146796379
Use TAC subs. To bad they are 4 episodes behind.
>>146796379
>Chinese transliteration is FUCKED though
Typical Japanese, then. I can't into Chinese because all the stuff I heard first was through Japan.

>>146798670
The names are better, but I like the normal speech better in the standard sub. Basically everything that isn't in Chinese is better. I wish someone would do a fusion of the two.
I can't tell if this is actually worth watching or just overrated because it's novel and not enough people are watching to disagree with the praise. It looks very cheesy.
>>146799710
Why don't you watch it and see for yourself?
>>146799710
>Needs to have someone tell him if something is good or not.
>>146799710
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bxvZLOnmDI
>>146799710
Cheesy is why it's fun. If you read threads on airing day you'll get two things: spoilers for that episode, and a lot of character discussion. I don't think when people are mostly interested in questioning characters or joking about them it's a sign of being overrated, it's not so much praise as an interest in the content. The praise and comments about it being amazing are usually from people who turn up saying they only just tried it, and they're not common in threads.
Unless your definition of overrated is that people watch it or talk about it, but we're still seeing at most one 300 post thread on Friday and a short one come Monday. It's not much and doesn't factor in how many posts are complaints or asking if it's any good.
>>146798628
My guess is that he's been cutting people in half with a blunt piece of shit
>>146800983
he didnt cut anyone in half though.
Infact, he never even cut anyone. His only confirmed kill was in the first episode, by somehow shattering the enemy sword, and his chest exploded.
The corpses he only struck down
>>146801243
He did cut the guy's face first with his blunt sword.
>>146801243
>The corpses he only struck down
He blew the flesh right off the skeleton
>>146801558
Which could just as well have been from him flinging a rock at him.
>>146801608
Thanks for agreeing he clearly didnt cut them then.
>>146799710
A lot of the praise comes from the fact that it's an incredibly by the numbers Taiwanese wuxia puppet show, which is something most people aren't aware of and thus don't have a frame of reference for.
>>146790169
I would like it more if I could remember the fucking names of the characters. Like holy shit, they're worse to remember than fucking Korean names. Yu Shin Sangba or something? What the fuck.
>>146801243
1. He cut that one guy's hand in ep 1.
2. I'm not sure what that 8-way technique did to Zan Kyou; it looked like Shou telekinetically ran his blade around his torso.
3. The other stuff he slashed (in the OP, some tables and chairs) can arguably be considered smashed to pieces, as if with a blunt object.
>>146802174
What
I've fapped to the doll feet in the OP. What's wrong with me.
>>146802805
I'm sorry Anon, but it seems you havea foot fetish.
>>146802078
I only remember Quicho(thief) and Ken (Jùan)
Is it really that generic by Taiwanese puppet show standards? I'm sure the directing and special effects isn't anything groundbreaking. Do they all have conversations like in TF with highly logical people pursuing their own individual goals? That feels like an Urobuchi thing to me and the biggest appeal of this.
Yep
>>146803432
It has more of an Urobuchi feel with the characters and also the general quest. But then again my experience with Wuxia has been mostly adaptations of jinyong novels.
>>146802078
Looks like that's the consensus; which is why from ep 2. onward the character names are shown in OP.
>>146803432
>highly logical people pursuing their own individual goals?
That's just a wuxia thing in general.
>>146802805
>>146803432
In the Thunderbolt threads, anons regularly post some of the fight scenes from other PILI shows.
Everything I've seens has been pretty good, especially from Thunderbolt Fantasy. Best action i've seen in awhile.
>>146792851
>since you can't have long shots with the puppets
But he did spread a long dialogue over at least three scenes of walking, which is all the more better to avoid having talking heads shots.
>>146790169
why was this the best movie about japanese culture to come out this year?
Yep
I don't get the Enigmatic Gale's motivation. The guy could have just let the girl die and take her sword if he really wanted to steal it. He also didn't need to assemble the crew and instead could have let Sho do all the work if his goal was to double cross the bones of creation. Furthermore, the phoenix killer served no purpose considering they could always take birds if he was in the way.
>>146805711
Globalization, appropriation, etc. That's what the world is moving toward. Everything influences each other. We aren't limited to our own "culture" since everything is available to us and can be our "culture."
>>146790169
If this show ends up on bakabt (or animebytes) a version with GOOD names better fucking end up as the chosen torrent.
That goes for the most seeded version on nyaa as well. You niggers better not seed this horriblesubs shit when a good alternative appears.
>>146808620
moving toward? that's already how it is.
>live in australia
>my culture is japan, american movies/television.
haven't had a TV hooked up for over 8 years, back when I lived with my parents.
>>146808431
You know, when he said he was trying to achieve a hero's ethos, do you think maybe he meant artificially creating a tale of a hero out of his own fucking around with people? He gathers a group of widely known individuals, puts them in one place, becomes accessory to the villain of the piece allowing a high stake to build without actually endangering the real sword guard, enables some no named wanderer to walk in and save the day, while the young man rescues the girl. Without Shoufukan it could have played out with someone else in the party getting the fame, but a zero to hero story, using existing heroes to authenticate it, is more exciting.
>>146809083
So he just wanted to live out his animes?
>>146809083
I like this fame angle of yours. He definitely had easier ways of getting people killed, but fame is a tougher objective.
>>146795756
He is bitter because he is above 40.
>>146808431
>I don't get the Enigmatic Gale's motivation.
It seems that he wants to steal something that is more valuable, at least to him, than that Sword. An anon in a past thread said he might have wanted to steal a reputation, or steal the chivalry of Shang.
>>146808431
>He also didn't need to assemble the crew and instead could have let Sho do all the work
He didn't know Sho's true powerlevels until near the end. And he let Sho come along since he needed someone to stop Tan Hi from trying to kill Betsutengai and getting herself killed. Or else he probably would have let him and Phoenix Killer duke out at the inn.
>Furthermore, the phoenix killer served no purpose considering they could always take birds if he was in the way.
That was Betsutengai deliberately sending his men out there to let the party steal the bird whistle. Shicho couldn't have foreseen that.
>>146792098

He's more a monk than a swordsman, have you played any rpg? When you equip a weapon to a "fighter" class it lowers all their stats. What I don't get is why would he put such a handicap to himself.
>>146810241
its not the same without the music
>>146814345
Sword prolly belonged to someone important/he killed someone and was exiled from wherever he was from and took the sword as a reminder.
>>146814345
>He's more a monk than a swordsman, have you played any rpg? When you equip a weapon to a "fighter" class it lowers all their stats. What I don't get is why would he put such a handicap to himself.
You remind me of a story about a great Chinese martial artist.
One day a friend of his ask why he carries a sword around. He isn't even a swordsman and anyway he can beat up most people with his bare hands.
"Well, you see," he replied. "Usually when I walk out without a sword, some poor guy tend to try to rob me. Then I would have to waste everyone's time taking him down."
"Wearing a sword protects other people from me."
>>146792132
I fucking miss this era of fantasy anime
The only thing in recent years with the same vibe was Guin Saga
I guess there's that new Arslan, but honestly the art style put me off so I didn't watch it.
>>146814660
Radical.
>>146814355
It's not the same without the hair product endorsement.
>>146815143
The new Arslan really got to me because I like Arakawa's works, loved Silver Spoon, but the art just didn't seem right in that anime. I haven't tried the manga to see if it's the colour palette/off-models at fault, but when you've seen the original OVAs you're not rearing to jump into it as much.
I enjoyed Yona which was quite goofy and colourful, but that's far more of a following the characters do stuff series than building anything fantastical. The anime stops before larger conflicts or supernatural events.
There's still so much choice for fantasy manga, yet anime projects aren't taking chances on it. Publishers are playing safe with familiar love interest focused stories and modern day meta. It's about time for another wave.
His world has been turned upside down.
What will he do now?

You people always complain about stuff being "localised", and now when the subs use original Chinese names you whine they're not using Japanese dub names. It's a definite proof that you don't care about sub accuracy, you're just a fucking weeb.
>>146821413
it's an animation because you are animating puppets.
The method of production doesn't matter as long as you're animating.
>>146824270
>You people always complain about stuff being "localised", and now when the subs use original Chinese names you whine they're not using Japanese dub names.
The names should always be whatever is being pronounced by the voices. You don't translate names, that's silly.
>>146824270
Not that guy, but it is pretty difficult to follow what people are saying sometimes when the names are not what people are saying. It gets especially confusing when you mix names up because of it.
>>146796379
You realise the subs are using the (pretty phonetic, if we ever heard them) Chinese versions of the names, while the voice tracks are in Japanese, right?
