I’ve been thinking about Sanji and Nami and their background stories and how they kind of seem to bring up similar themes in different ways. After the last few chapters, and everything we’ve learned about Sanji, I felt like it was time to share some of my thoughts. Nothing major, but rather something I’ve been thinking about from time to time through the years.

It’s interesting because especially now, thanks to recent revelations, looking at Sanji’s and Nami’s backgrounds I can’t help but see how they are almost the opposite of each other in some regards and yet very similar in other ways.
Nami grew up with Bellemere and Nojiko, who are not her ”real” family.
Sanji grew up with his real (blood) family.
Sanji grew up as a royal prince, (most likely) having almost everything. Except love.
Nami grew up quite poor, not having much. Except love.

Because of his interests and talents Sanji is shunned by his family and he is considered useless.
Because of her interests and talents Nami is praised by her family and when Arlong notices she’s revered for it and is considered useful.
We also have Nami (and her family) having food but little money, while Sanji (and Zeff) are stuck on that island with tons of money but no food. Nami’s story shows them in desperate need of money, while Sanji’s is about the desperate need for food. Both of them end up treasuring the thing they lacked. Nami never wastes money, and Sanji never wastes food.
We also have their stories being kind of reversed when it comes to the timeline.
Nami starts off with a happy childhood.
Sanji starts off with a crappy childhood.
Then they both reach a turning point.
Sanji leaves his family in some way and eventually gains freedom. Zeff takes him in and and Sanji basically gains a parent that he never had. He grows up a pirate.
Nami’s story is the opposite. She lost her parent and ended up becoming trapped on that island under the Arlong Pirates. She grows up hating pirates.

We could also include that Nami’s birthparents died in a war, while Sanji’s birthfamily are known as warmongerers.
Of course these are just some random observations, and obviously big parts of their stories are not included in this setup at all, but I just thought it was interesting. I’m also curious to see if there will be any more parallels as we learn more about Sanji. But both stories are definitely some of my favorites of Oda’s, and have similar messages.
Sanji had an abusive family while Nami had a loving one, but in the end they both learned the same thing. Both Nami’s and Sanji’s stories are about how blood isn’t what makes a family, and personally I love that.

When and if Luffy loses his shit hard, Bellamy gives him the same sort of punch he got from him. Like, we get another Ace-is-dead style freakout because stuff went down, and Luffy's just rampaging in rage or despair, and in that moment of weakness Bellamy is able to knock him out so he stops embarrassing himself... I think that'd be cool.

Jinbe fills my fishman quota and looks like he could be the ultimate voice of reason in that crew of maniacs since he's way older and wiser. And he's a capable fighter without a devil fruit. I'm almost done rewatching fishman island and he already feels like family so I understand if his joining isn't the hypest. We're already quite comfortable with him.

He joins with the dream to be strong enough to be strongh enough to beat Luffy fair and square, no baggage or cheap tricks, and make sure Luffy's not falling off the wagon either. In that regard, I see Carrot as a better contender, but since Luffy wants to have 10 crewmates alongside himself, the is space for both.

If Jinbe survives this arc and does not have to leave for other duties again for raisins, I think he and Carrot will complete the crew with the Helmsman and the Lookout and that will be it.

If he does die though, I am really really interested in who might join otherwise.

There is this weird theory that since all the SH's DF's names are acually made of syllables that can also stand for numbers. Luffy- Gomu Gomu (5-6, 5-6) Chopper- Hito Hito (1-10, 1-10) Robin- Hana Hana (8-7, 8-7) Brook- Yomi Yomi (4-3, 4-3). That would leave only 2 and 9

2 can be Ni, Futa and Yu

9 can be Kyu, Ku and Ki

You have to kinda strech it for Yu and Ki, as these are non-standard, but they are possible nontheless

I don't remeber the names for Kin'emon's fruit anymore with which it would work, I don't speak Japanese, but it was something like Clothing or Costume Fruit. Obviously won't work if Oda chooses another name that doesn't work with this.

Yuki Yuki (2-9, 2-9) checks out though, so Monet's fruit.

This would also work for Kuma's fruit, as for the one some people speculated Franky could potentially eat, but especially the Franky one is really just some random headcannon.

I just think this fits all too perfectly to break the pattern, this is just such an Oda thing to do. The question just remains who it would be and which fruit. I don't actually see Kin'emon in the crew, and neither do I see Monet, especially both Monet and Carrot, Oda would not lower the sausage quota so drastically suddenly. It could very will be Carrot like the guy from the last thread theorized, or Nami, because I too think Monet is actually dead.

I love both series. How in the fuck is One Piece slow compared to Hunter x Hunter? Maybe the 2011 series which has the benefit of being made over a decade later and so it skims the fat, but that's not a fair comparison. In the amount of time it takes Luffy to "beat" East Blue, Gon's just made it to the first real conflict in the series.

If you don't like the first few episodes, you'll probably never like it. If you're still interested, I'd recommend at least completing the Arlong Park Arc. If you still don't like it by then, you're never going to like it.
