It's interesting on a plot level, sure, but that'd literally be throwing away the entire story for the sake of a cheap twist.

It's a shame how much potential this series had.

The beginning showed glimpses of something special, and even though it got bumpy midway - it still managed to hold its own in an industry saturated with uninspiring and generic Isekai anime.

They made a gritty and complex character in Subaru, along with actual well done allusions to the Seven Deadly Sins, the constellations, and much more. Tappei was very delicate with them, and intertwined it with his own language to weave a complex and non-pretentious narrative. The setting had a rich and captivating lore, along with a few mysteries that would make Tolkien jealous. Finally, they made a well developed villain-turned-heroine that serves as both a stabilizer and a foil to Subaru. Of course, the storytelling was stellar as well.

But unfortunately in typical Japanese otaku wish-fulfilling fashion, the writer takes a big fat shit on any semblance that would make a great story, and turns it into the soulless cash-grabbing garbage known as isekai. All the great characterization and mystery has turned into a generic adventure story.

A damn shame, really.

I'm just of the opinion that sometimes the bad guy has severely out planned, matched, gunned etc the heroes. Depending on context beating the villain may actually cause more destruction (insert other negative consequences here) than leaving the status quo as is. Most often if they go for over throwing the villain, they do it in a 'happily ever after, everyone just totally gets along, class reforms never happened, those loyal to villain stood down easily and all is well', with a little time skip.

If it's some little scuffle not effecting national or world levels justice may somehow just catch up with either party, somehow.

I'm not all for happily ever after, it can feel contrived as fuck, particularly when villain is meant to be that far ahead of the protagonists in what ever way that may be.

For me happily ever after is not the best ending to a work, it can leave just as bad a taste in your mouth as the villain winning. It needs to make sense in the stories world how they came to win and 'fix' everything, which on grander scales is hard to do, it can also come off as pushing agenda/political/class view etc. if heavy handed enough that how/why the new order is more acceptable than the last.

One of the most interesting things about Re: Zero to me is that for many of the main characters, we know absolutely nothing about them. Yet Subaru is fiercely loyal to them despite this.

Namely, Emili, Roswaal, and Puck. I trust most of the characters in this show about as far as I can throw them, yet I trust these three even less than that.

Because frankly they haven’t really told Subaru anything about themselves. Emilia appears to have something to do with the witch. Puck is a terrifying monster. And Roswaal seems even more frightful than either of them, plus he is an absolutely terrible lord who gives no shits about defending the peasants who tend his land.

Yet Subaru doesn’t seem to even question any of this.
