People feel strongly about Anno because Neon Genesis Evangelion was strongly different than other anime of the time. Being a giant robot anime, it differentiated itself hard from typical giant robot anime. The story-telling was, at times, depressing and nihilistic. Ikari Gendou, in particular, is a villain who's motives are selfish and cruel, yet basically understandable; many people are driven to horrible deeds to reclaim a loved one, but few have been put in a position that requires the sacrifice of the entire human race to do so.

Take a look at Sunrise's Brain Powerd for a contemporary example. It was their response to Evangelion, but they tried to do it in the style of anime they had already been using. It's a incoherent mess.

In other words, Anno made an impact. People feel strongly about that.
