What does /a/ think of Beautiful Dreamer? Good movie?
>watching normalfag anime
This, Yamato, Gundumb, maison ikkoku and the like are all garbage. People bitch about otaku pandering shit but wide market pandering shit is just as bad (see Hollywood)
The only remotely fun normalfag series is City Hunter.
>Even though the movie is generally well loved by English-speaking fans, when it was first released in Japan the response was not as favorable. Writer/director Mamoru Oshii, unsatisfied with how the first film, Only You had developed, rejected the idea of catering to audience expectations and decided to do the film his own way. This almost caused Rumiko Takahashi, the manga artist, to reject the script because it deviated so far from the original story, and generated a lot of criticism for Oshii, generally from the fan community.
As a result, Oshii quit working on the production of Urusei Yatsura and went on to do other more experimental projects. This is also seen as the first movie in which he displayed his unique directing style.
Because it's being live streamed for the anime's 35th anniversary. Did you miss all of those threads?
Optimal: 104 (release order)
Good enough for the full experience: 82
Absolute bare minimum: 24 (if you have no interest in the show but just want to see Oshii's 3deep)
One of the main characters in Beautiful Dreamer is introduced in episodes 60-69 so you really should go with one of the above two options.
>autists criticize him so hard he stops working on the adaptation of their shitty gag manga
>he goes on to direct fucking Ghost in the Shell and become one of the most influential filmmakers ever
i hope those faggots who got mad at him died of a salt overdose
You can continue the manga if you want, but the anime order goes:
Episodes 1-58 > Film 1 > Episodes 59-106 > Film 2 > Episodes 107-140 > Film 3 > Episodes 141-174 > OVA 1 > Episodes 175-190 > OVA 1.5 > Episodes 191-195 > Film 4 > OVA 2 > OVA 3 > Film 5 (manga ending) > OVAs 4-11 > Film 6 > OVA 12
Based Anzai Fumitaka
The first two thirds are exceptional with the stunning visuals, and oshii's philosophical mindfuck rambling. The last third drag out a bit, introduces a lame character and finishes with an anti-climax.
I liked some episodes more. With all the praise it gets, I had over-expectations. But it's definitely on the upper quarter of the best UY.
Why 82 in particular? I think watching right after Ruyonosuke is introduced (60~ish) is perfectly fine.
To be fair, in the time it must've been shocking. It'd be the same if someone did that with a current franchise. Some time later people understand why it's good, but in the time the wildly different style must've been jarring.
>watched the episode with the magic 8-balls that let you see your future husband or wife
>Mr. Marubashi sees his wife
Later it turns out that the balls were faulty and make you see the person that'll make you the most miserable
>Sakura in bikini at the beginning
How is that genuinely funny?
Watch episode 82 again, then watch the movie. Pay attention and you might notice. Who knows, the answer might've been under your nose the entire time.
>Ran willing to marry Darling to spite Lum
>you will never use an old telephone like this
>introduces a lame character
What? Were you expecting someone super complex? Mujaki was a good villain and showed Oshii still had a strong grasp on what Urusei Yatsura is; a comedy.
Just because Beautiful Dreamer's an intellectually challenging film doesn't mean it has to be super fucking serious, complex or dark like EoE.
>finishes with an anti-climax
Again, what were you expecting? How could they have made the film more climactic without making it worse?
I've watched both recently, and I don't see anything that would make me discourage watching the movie right after Ruyo introduction. The reference could be interesting, but If it's that subtle, it has to be no more than a funny easter egg.
> good vilain
he barely posed any challenge to the protagonists, he's weak, the character has no clear purpose, goal, direction. I didn't want him to be complex or anything, just at least funny if not serious and threatening, The result is that he's just goofy and uninteresting
Obviously I didn't mean an epic final battle, just a nice wrap up, a punchline, a final plot twist. It just decreased in pacing and ended
I haven't seen it yet and I dread watching it because the BD remaster cuts off some of the bottom in the transition to 16:9 or so from 4:3
Why do remasters do this? It happened in Arcadia of my Youth too, I don't understand.
and everyone knew who's the mysterious little girl that appeared throughout the film, it was so obvious I really thought oshii was building up for a twist. He didn't. She's a small lamu, that's all.
