Quite the contrary. I'd agree that this gave Emilia a chance to develop without any distractions but know this. He knows the value of inflicting hardship to give the stigma of reward a more meaningful scene.

Yeah Rem is pretty fucked up actually, even the anime shows this, she has major trust and self-esteem issues and she's killed him once and tortured him once. She's also self-sacrificing and self-loathing in a truly deep seated way (Ram was her reason to live, Subaru is her reason to die) which is also part of what makes her character compelling.

With that said, I don't think Rem x Subaru is that healthy of a relationship but it's pretty easy to root for because of the sheer, transcendental depth of her devotion. If anything, ep 15 is far more important to establishing her character in my mind than ep 18. I actually think showing more of her scummy traits would have made her more of a symbol to Subaru, because it'd highlight how they actually had more than a few things in common. Subaru would be better able to identify with her in those ways.

I don't think it's that necessary because the important things are already there.

-Both are seemingly insignificant people in the world
-Is willing to throw their life to protect a special someone
-Extreme tendencies to shoulder every last burden
-Unreasonably devoted

The prank however, no matter how cruel it was I still wanted it. It could have given a stronger impression regarding her feelings and squeezed out what Subaru never realized.

Echidna sounds to me like someone who is thirsty for knowledge, but she's not necessarily a bad person.

She probably made the contract sound unappealing to see what route Subaru would take, and possibly to lean him towards the "right choice". He supposed hate for Emilia also doesn't come off as being all too true as well.
