There are plenty of anime fansubs that skip having these valuable running length commentary tracks in various shows. I guess the fansubbers figure that 99.9% of the fans don't care or something. So the commentaries aren't included even though they were subtitled in the DVD release.

The way that they explore those character's psychologies expands upon the overall themes - sexuality, obsession, growing up etc. . . - of the show. Characters can add to the thematic elements of a story without needing to figure directly into the plot. I guess it's better if they do both, but it still adds interesting stuff to the story.

The Black Rose arc is a little slow and seems like an interruption from the main arcs, so even I'm not completely fond of it. But I still wouldn't want it taken out, because it does add worthwhile content that makes the series better overall.

I think what it tells us about the main plot is just too subtle.

At least from my point of view it basically tells us that Akio has tried different methods to return power of Dios to him before. Mikage is what happens to a man who doesn't leave his childish dreams, or what might've happened to Utena if she hasn't outgrew Ohtori Academy.

It also expands upon this theme of eternity. Akio is eternal and end of his world because he lost ability to change, to grow. Stagnation can be interpreted as eternity, no?

Utena has some high-brow references in it, but overall it's really just a deconstruction of the shojo genre, so if you're familiar with shojo troupes at all you shouldn't have to research that much. And a lot of shojo troupes aren't even specific or limited to shojo - the handsome noble prince sweeping the girl away is pretty universal in all girly romance stories. But Utena subverts that by deciding to become the prince herself, and it goes from there. . .
