This was the first episode of this show that made me want to just keep watching more and more. Phoenix Killer was great and even though I'm sure Shou Fu Kan isn't going to kill Lin Setsu A next episode, I'm still hype.

I figure it was a blunt sword because the other swords usually have an edge. He also sighed after Darkswan boasted about not showing off his skill, I figured from that point on that Lin Setsu A is actually a good guy who really wants to keep the sword safe. Which is why he said 'the ethos of a champion', he's a thief who wants to be a hero so he let Screaming Faggot Killer come along because he was okay with dying if it would have Screaming Faggot Killer fight Darkswan because he figured Screaming Faggot Killer would win for sure. He took monk along and said 'he's important to the end' without knowing that that would actually turn out true.

I remembered that I accidentally dulled my sword with polish and I couldn't cut for tameshigiri. It took me a while to realise because my sensei thought the sword was fine as he could still cut with my blunt sword.

I understood that bit to mean that Rinsetsua is after stealing the "Ethos of a champion" from people, it's not a coincidence that every past member of his are renowned for their villainy.

His ultimate goal is to rob Shoufukan of his chivalry not steal anything material. This is why the umbrella bit is important, the only one who would carry on with their promise to do a good deed in exchange of the umbrella is a chivalrous person, which is what Rin is after. Shang being actually strong is the surprise element, since Rin, planned to have the other party members carry the weight.

Whether Shoufukan ends up being corrupted is hard to tell, but I think he won't, thus making it a bad end for Rin.

Just a guess, but Shofukan wants to escape his past life and everything associated with it. He is probably a hero from Xi You that was their equivalent to Screaming Phoenix, but someone trying to escape his past as a killer so he discarded everything including his fighting style and fled to Dong Li to make a new life for himself.

That is why he is so cynical about Kan building a reputation since he probably feels that his reputation in trapped him and likewise he had no problem going to kill Betsutengai by himself since he was probably the best warrior in his corner of the world.
