Defects can happen anon. Take a look at the break pattern. It's fairly obvious that there was a hairline fracture in the glass, or some other imperfection that began to spread over time until the glass failed at a weigh much lower than it was rated for.

What? The small, pebble-like shards mean it's tempered glass.

Inspecting it won't help. Tempered glass is manufactured with internal stress, which makes it much stronger than untreated glass. But if it cracks, all of that stress is released and it basically explodes. You won't see any long, gradual cracks and splinters like in a window or wine glass.

Which is good, in a way, because the little nuggets of tempered glass are much less dangerous than the long, sharp knife edges of regular glass shards.

None. The plastic used is colored so you get a flat color per piece but because figures are made of plastic and scale mucks with shadow it won't pop without some work from a spray gun. I've never seen one of those kits not dolled up but they shouldn't be THAT far off for the official ones. The knockof would look more akin to a marble statue.

Let's say you scratched the glass vertically (along an outer edge) while you were installing it. There is now a stress concentration point on the side of the glass.

Now, there are three ways of applying force that can cause a crack to propagate. Under normal use, the load (the weight of your PVC under Earth's gravity), was perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (parallel to the scratch). Nothing that would cause the glass to explode.

But one day, there was a rapid or extreme temperature change, which caused the glass to expand. The stress was concentrated at the scratch, which began to open up like a zipper (Fig. 1). This stress, acting perpendicular to the scratch, caused the crack to propagate, and your shelf exploded almost instantaneously.

I took mechanics and materials anon, I understand. But at the same time, and you and I both know this, IKEA does have a history of defects in their products. Now yes, the possibility that this was caused by user error in some way is absolutely there, and I'm aware of that. I would imagine it's because they always have those plastic frames, which stop the edges from getting scratched. Scratches on the surface don't lead to cracks.

Also, you don't have to worry about rapid temperature changes, because it takes several hours for a refrigerator to cool down or warm up.
