No word is useless, anon-kun
>>
>>146582856
I mean, sure, if you came across it in the first place then it's not useless, but that's not my point. Some threads ago, an anon gave this example and I agree 100%: when you see the word 菊, you don't need to know what the hell a chrysanthemum is, just that it's a kind of flower.
>>

Useless, until you have a menu in front of you written entirely in moonrunes, and you have to blindly point at things like a useless white pig American monkey.

Here's the big secret: learning Japanese isn't DIFFICULT. It's just time consuming as all fuck.

If you put in the time, it will come. What people mean when they say it's difficult is really "hard to focus for long enough and put in the time required". They are probably using terrible / inefficient learning methods too.

Follow the guide, and when you get to the reading stage, make sure it's REALLY interesting. So much so that slogging through really slowly is still fun enough to put in the effort. Never stop.

I've got some questions about a story (h), can someone help me understand it?

This is the link (Cuvie story from Kairakuten Beast 2016-08):
https://exhentai.org/s/cd0fbb7fac/969023-104

There's a girl and her boyfriend, and her friend meet them by accident.
Then boyfriend meets friend in a rain near his house, she kinda invites herself in and starts to push him.
Then the dialogue follows:

> やっぱりね
> あの子高校の時の元カレにも一年お預け食らわせたから
At first I thought it was "Since she also made her former boyfriend wait for an year, I "ate" him", but reading the rest, I'm guessing it's "she got eaten".
It's what makes more sense, but I had to infer this from the context, I wish I could understand this WITHOUT the context... don't know what I did wrong here.

Then the boyfriend starts pondering, and the thieving friend says:
> 昔のこと反省してんのかな?
> あんなに長くお預けしたのにいざヤッたらハマっちゃって
"Even though she made you wait that long..."
Now's the part I can't really make much sense.
My guess is "even if you did it now, she's already fucked" or something.
Like "she made you wait so much, even though she's not a virgin anymore" kinda of meaning?
I also had to guess this line from the context...

> メイ サルみたいに盛ってたことあったから
"Mei... she already copulated like a monkey"
Didn't made much sense at first, but matching with the previous lines, sounds like she's just provoking him.

Can someone clarify these please?
I think it all went downhill since I couldn't figure the 食らう properly, unsure between not knowing if the thieving friend got him or if she got raped, then I wasn't sure in the following sentences.

食らわせる is 食らう in the causative form. "To cause to eat."

And this 食らう is not literal. お預けを食らう means to be forced to wait. 食らわせる indicates the act of forcing to wait.

> あの子
She
>高校の時の元カレにも
To her ex from high school also
>一年お預け食らわせたから
Forced him to wait for one year.

I thought I had gotten (no pun intended) it wrong since you mentioned it, but no...

The 2nd line I think I'm guessing she's talking about the girlfriend then, so it makes more sense with the 3rd line.
Figuring the "hidden subject" is one of the biggest issues I have when trying to read...

So, something like
"She made you wait so long even though if she did it now, [she]'d get addicted to it"
And then
"Mei... she already has copulated like a monkey"

I think I got the meaning of it now, many thanks!

Japanese people idealize us. Myself when I see all these nice portrayals of my country in anime I feel happy but truthfully I don't see those reflecting reality and the current state of things at all.

Only thing that'd be true would be references and praises to our food and such which you can see in anime like Shokugeki no Souma, etc.
>>

If you're reading a stylized billboard or very small text, context is the only real way to read it. He has a point.

You both have a valid argument, but that probably won't stop you from bickering over nothing.
>>
>>146595881
Isn't this true to pretty much all countries?

It's that "the grass is greener..." thing, always. I myself idealize the US since I think it's much better than where I am (and it's true), but when I ask a native they complain with a hundred things about it.
>>
I paid for Japanese classes with a native teacher and when we got to writing she said I can't learn Japanese because I'm left handed. I've accepted this fate but I really want my kid to be bilingual. Should I take his pencil out of his left hand whenever he tries to use it?
>>

I think it's due to Japan being 99.9% populated by native, closed-off, still having their culture intact and thus being self-sufficient on everything they need (be it living needs or entertainments, etc). They don't necessarily realize other countries don't have it as well as them, or I should say didn't go the same path these recent decades due to globalism destroying more and more cultures across the globe.

This is going to sound very weeaboo-ish but I do mean it : Japan is most likely the best country on the planet as of today and it's not even close.

Reading context is reading the language. You do realize that kana and kanji shapes differ depending on how stylized they're written or if they're on a computer, right? 心 isn't written like how it's shown on a computer.
>>
>>146596434
Ultimately it's subjective, but then I want to ask : what does NZ has to offer to me? Does it have all the games that made my childhood what it was? Does it have all the artists (be it music or drawing) I'm looking up to? Does it have any entertainment for me?

Japan has a lot of those and even more waiting for me, NZ has nothing.

Stroke order is NOT needed to read Japanese unless the person's handwriting is so hideous that they shouldn't be allowed to write anyway. You probably won't even have to read handwritten Japanese very often since most of you are learning the language for anime, manga, and VNs.

Stroke order IS necessary to have good handwriting though. Well, not really. As long as you're writing everything in almost-stroke order then your handwriting will be fine. Only if you, again, have hideous handwriting and shouldn't be allowed to write do you need stroke order for others to be able to tell what the hell you're trying to say.

What? You claimed that using context to read is inferior to using stroke order. Because that happens in real life, despite what you might want to tell yourself.

If they're writing with the correct stroke order, their versions of the radicals will not become more similar to eachother than display fonts make them. The only way to get more similar than display fonts is to literally write one as the other, which requires wrong stroke order or very careful precision. It's literally not humanly possible to make one look like the other in proper stroke order without intentionally doing so. It's like making "C" look like "Q". It really is that much of a difference.

You're making an invalid generalization of my claim. I said that the radicals, in *proper* (not necessarily neat or legible!) handwriting, will always look more dissimilar to eachother than in display fonts. I said nothing about a specific display font. For any asinine stylization of handwriting, you can find a corresponding stylization of display fonts. The handwriting will always have these two radicals look less like eachother than the display font, unless the display font itself is basically rendering one of the radicals in an outright nonstandard way where the handwriting is not, which is a style matching error.

"increasingly" implies a comparison to a previous state of dissimilarity. Thus, when asking what you are comparing with, "each other" is not a valid answer. A valid answer would be some other state of dissimilarity, such as the level of dissimilarity on a given computer font. This should have been obvious from the following sentence
>There are certainly people who write badly enough for them to look more similar than they do on my computer font.
But since you have trouble with English and context, you decided to give an incorrect answer and then laughably attacked me for not understanding context.

We've seen this shit in DJT already that stroke order can help identify characters, especially handwritten ones or brush stroke fonts.

That's because they start dissimilar in display fonts.

>Thus, when asking what you are comparing with, "each other" is not a valid answer.
That's not how phrase nesting goes to work. Go back to kindergarten, where arguments about forgetting the relationship between words in a phrase might accomplish something. "Increasingly [dissimilar to eachother]" is 100% completely logically and grammatically valid.

>But since you have trouble with English and context
False.

>you decided to give an incorrect answer
I gave a correct answer.

>and then laughably attacked me for not understanding context.
You literally dropped "to eachother" and then constructed a completely nonsensical semantics argument against me in order to defend yourself and project your language failure onto me. I think you're an idiot, idiot.

>No true Scotsman.
Proper handwriting uses correct stroke order. That has been an axiom of my claim the entire time. I never claimed what I said was valid outside of proper handwriting as I'm defining it. That's not a fallacy, that's basic logic.

>It seems you didn't have a reason to butt in to begin
I didn't butt in anywhere. You butted in. You responded to me. I can prove 100% that you initiated conversation with me, not the other way around.

>except to brag that you could tell the two radicals apart
There's nothing at all unique to the fact that "I" can tell two radicals apart. If you somehow assumed I was bragging, you should probably destroy your computer and never attempt textual communication with another human being ever again, because you have a broken textual attitude recognition system.

You're just biased and attribute correct answers to stroke order and are trying to ignore the benefits of other forms of knowledge. Maybe stroke order is helpful as a beginner, but if you actually know Japanese nobody actually pays attention to it (when reading). Therefore, people fight against the claims that you need to know stroke order to read handwriting. Because any benefits of stroke order don't really matter once you have a bit of actual experience.
>>
>>146598770
>You couldn't understand a simple English phrase even after I explained it to you
Yeah, I could, and I did. You're making an invalid assumption that some phrase I used was built off it. It was not. From the very beginning I was making a strict comparison between two levels of dissimilarity, one level in display fonts, one level in handwriting. The fact that you went on an autismal semantical tirade about misunderstanding a specific instance of the wording I used, that's your fault, not mine. The fact that you're so incessant on this only proves that you're in the wrong, because only someone that's projecting their personal failures so hard would pull out cards like "you're not smart enough for this".

>If you want to be worth discussing things with, work on your English and logic skills and come back in a few years.

However, it looks like it has 2 strokes at first glance because of a lack of stroke knowledge?

If you knew how to write out RO, the sloppy 2nd and 3rd stroke shouldn't look too odd in a "marker written" font like the example. Because of that knowledge, you'd be able to puzzle out that it was in fact 2 and not 3 strokes.

You can't use the fact that it might be a RO to figure out that it's a RO. That's cheating. Knowing how to write RO only helps if you have enough gestalt power to realize that it might be a RO in the first place.

-Stroke order (or really practicing handwriting, which is what people say when they mean stroke order) may help beginners read manga fonts
-If you read a bunch of VNs and get context power before trying handwritten stuff you might not have any problems even if you don't know stroke order
-For really bad handwriting or stylized fonts you will often have to rely on context power regardless of whether or not you have practiced writing

>>

The general rule is stick to anki unless you have a learning disability that prevents you from doing anki or are being paid by another website to shill their resource.
>>

His Japanese is nothing special. Every N1 should be able to speak like this. Maybe it's just because they're talking about something very easy but I wouldn't be so sure he's native-level fluent based on just that video alone.

There is a DOJG grammar deck.

I wasn't actually recommending not to read Tae Kim, but you probably could get away with doing the DOJG deck and nothing else until you start reading (at which point you look up stuff that confuses you)

I think it's necessary when you're first starting out, you should be prepared for how difficult it is and if you can overcome those first few months of hell, it'll become easier and more enjoyable. Learning is fun, but starting from zero is difficult. Don't feel it's a waste of time.

キマシタワー is the form that converted to formal + slang form.
It's used only when confirmed 百合(ゆり).

tips:
しました is formal (common.
しましたわ is formal, used by like Princess Milady Lady.
In the same way です and ですわ.

And also キマシタワー has mean タワー(tower), literally.
So we may sometimes say キマシタワーが"建った".

関西、特に"大阪"は日本でも”特別”な文化があります。

ネットでは関西弁を避けて標準語を使っています。
