You have to understand that a lot of folks that worked on the later seasons of Sailor Moon went on to work on Utena, so most people felt it was kind of a more comedic take on it with some interesting characters moments and much more interesting aesthetics.

Then shit the fan, and people felt it was the greatest thing ever.
