It wasn't flawless at all. He basically started playing with L and the police early on, by making them understand he had access to the police database. Light was extremely childish and immature, and L even pointed that out.
If he hadn't acted like a child he wouldn't have got caught. Sure, L knew Kira was in Japan and that he was a student, but there wasn't much he could have done with that information alone

He lost the moment he intentionally let L know that he had access to police information in an attempt to get L and the police mistrust each other.
The Lind L. Tailor incident was a mistake, but it was only a minor setback, there was no way that L could ever deduce who Kira was when the only intel he had was that he's a Kanto resident that's possibly a High School student.
But by letting L know that he has police intel, he narrowed it down from millions to a couple hundred suspects, making his defeat inevitable.
