And they were some of the best films of the last decade. Tokikake seems very promising but all of Hosoda's subsequent films have been getting progressively worse.

I haven't watched Kimi no Na wa, but it seems like it's popular because it's got a mainstream friendly story and is technically solid with good art. Not sure if there's anything truly brilliant in it yet. Good for Shinkai if he can become a more commercially successful director but doesn't say much otherwise.
