Punpun depicts the form of depression that's most relatable, rather than the one that seeps in and slowly drags you to a hell of emptiness. The author clearly couldn't tackle this and ended up making it way too dramatic/dark and shoves this down the readers throat in a very forced way. It's probably just my perspective on how depression should be depicted but it still stays something when I couldn't appreciate this manga at all. It all came across as ridiculous to me.

It seems to me that almost nobody got what Asano wanted to say with this manga. It's his antithesis to classic coming-of-age stories, to Catcher in the Rhye, Demian etc. The point is, Punpun is a ridiculous, whiny, edgy dumbass by the end of the story and deserved every part of the tragedy. But he couldn't change anything because he never had any strength to even change one little fucking thing. That's why he stays a pathetic whiny little shit and only grows as a character when he can drag other people down. He didn't even deserve death at the end, only a miserable, meaningless life. His depression is supposed to be laughable after a certain point.
