I started with Prisma and stayed for the Nasuverse lore and mythological representations.

Started reading literally because why not, since from description FSN seemed like a stupid edgefest. It was better than I expected, but I didn't actually like it that much. The best things in it were Rin and THAT WORLDBUILDING. I just enjoy insane metaphysics which are actually explained, and are explicitly not how things work in our world (instead of not explaining anything because you have to leave room for it to be "real" for some reason).
What really made me a fan was Tsukihime, though. Especially Hisui route. It's a sad thing Nasu would probably never write something as potent again.

I got into Fate series when Fate/Zero had finished airing and thought "this shit was good", so I then went to play the VN and had to stop halfway through as I could no longer tolerate playing from Shirou's perspective. Then watched UBW anime and had to say was fairly disappointing compared to Fate/Zero. Fate Extra was good however and Fate/Apocypha was fine until its poor ending.

After a friend suggested that I watch the anime, I did some research on it. The plot sounded pretty nice: mages summoning heroes into modern times to compete to obtain the holy grail. I watched the FSN anime adaptation that DEEN made and I thought Illya was the cutest thing. Honestly, I didnt much care for the plot after that as it seemed really cheesy to me. But I read the VN and HA going forward solely for Illya.

tl;dr: came for the plot, stayed for Illya.

Tsukihime back in the day. Fate wasn't as good but it was fine, explored more about magic circuits and shit.

I watched the Tsukihime animation back in 2005 and I liked it. I wanted to know if there was more to it, and found it was based on a VN, and that both stories were rather different, the adaptation being very inferior, to the point of being absolutely bad.
At the time I read some spoilers, but I didn't realise how bad the adaptation was until I was able to read the VN in 2006.

Once I was done with it, I got to read KT once it was released and I played MB some time after that.

Then I joined TM groups like Beast's Lair and /tm/, where I learned of F/sn and other works. If I remember correctly, both Notes and Talk/Preludes had been translated already, so I read them and I loved them.

Most people at the time, I recall, speaking highly of F/sn because of HF, even though only very few people had read the VN. That being said, Shirou wasn't too popular at the time due to how dumb he had been portrayed in the 2006 anime (which I hadn't watched, and all I knew about it was the Archer scene in ep14(?) and the GAR memes).

I recall SaiGAR popping up during this time and the mass butthurt that ensured when Kyon beat Nanaya Shiki in it. I think we only held SaiGAR twice, due to the shitstorm.

Anyhow, if I remember well, the English patch for Fate was out sometime during 2007, and I really liked it. I absolutely liked the setting and I completely fell for Saber. By 2008 I remember the translators not releasing UBW because of the installer not being ready and plenty of memes ensured, someone even leaked the patch and I got it here. Later we learned they were holding back the patch, because they wanted to add the voices from the PS2 port, Realta Nua. By this time the video for Last Episode was out (the extra for Fate route that came with RN), and a translation followed some time later.

I finally got to read HF sometime during 2009, I think. I liked it, but I didn't think much about it and thought it was seriously overrated.

After this Nasu began milking Fate.

The first thing that drew me to the series was seeing pics of Rider here on /a/. She's hot as fuck, though I would soon come to realize that Rin is best girl.

I had never read a VN before, so I went the pleb route and watched the 2006 anime. The animation was awful, parts of the story didn't make sense, but I fell in love with the story anyway. I could tell that there was a great story behind this shitty adaptation. So I went deeper.

Continuing to be an idiot, I watched the UBW movie. It was trash, and I hated it. I still hate it because it revealed Archer's identity, and I would have liked to experience that reveal in a better way.

Watched Zero. Good, but too edgy. Watched UBW TV, and it was perfect, fuck all of you.

Finally I read the VN, and it was better than everything else.

The depth of this story is amazing. The focus on ideals, motivations, and philosophy is great. I love all the stupid stats and abilities, I love how Fate is part of a bigger universe. And I really enjoy how much content there is, I've been taking in new Type Moon content consistently for years, and there's still more.

no. it had serious pacing issues. despite adapting the VN quite faithfully in a lot of parts, the long drawn long dialogues of the VN don't lend themselves well to an anime adaptation. first cour was better at keeping a good pace but the second cour not so much. the shirou/archer fight especially was a chore to watch.

The memes, are the only good thing come out Fate.

The main FSN VN is a clusterfuck, a massive wordy 20,000 words too long clusterfuck. There's no subtlety at all, they hammer down Shiro's hero complex like what? Every goddamn morning before he wakes up on every route? Battles are decided through plotarmor and who had the spicier memes. Half of the decision that leads to Tiger Dojo doesn't really make sense (for example in Fate route, the point they try to hammer you is not jump into fight between servants, but then half of the decision involving you staying back leads to Saber jobbing hard and Tiger Dojo visit).

Shirou on itself is an awkward character. He has too much character/backstory, or at least too different from me to be a self insert but yet not enough to carry the series as protagonist like Guts carry Berserk or the Jojos carry each part. I feel like I never really root for him due to him being very very retardedly dumb and keeps getting away with it through plotarmor (granted the Tiger Dojos are all canon too, but still the choices are fairly arbitrary and if not keeps rewarding his stupidity).

Finally the sex scenes are horribly out of place for most part. I'm not even talking about mana transfer through sex. I'm talking about character logic, like how in the infamous threesome they bother to contemplate on attacking innocents to exemplify how dire things are but suddenly PSYCH you stick your dick into you're waifu and everything will be fine. Then the RN patch introduces an even more laughable memetastic scenes, not to mention plotholes into the series.

At the end it's a trainwreck, but it's good kind of trainwreck that you can't look away from. It's a guilty pleasure at most, and if you're NEET with no life and 60 hours to spend, the memes might make it worth it. Also good doujins on most characters, and the waifus come in all fetish and taste.

It's accurate to some versions, but the sword in the stone in those versions is traditionally unnamed. Caliburnus is an archaic name for Excalibur, Nasu just recycled it to name the sword in the stone.
In the versions where they are separate, the sword in the stone shatters when King Arthur dueled King Pellinore, for reasons that vary by the telling. The lady of the lake grants him indestructible Excalibur thereafter.

Got my attention since the VN was released, the theories that Saber was Jeanne were rampart at the time, the revelation that she was Arthur(ia) had everyone calling bullshit but for me it was genius. I love how for other characters they take any small detail or trivia and implements it into their lore. Waiting to see how they play Quetzalcoatl into FGO, hoping that they play it from the Aztecs POV. Pic totally related
