Learning Japanese is like climbing a very long staircase. If you try to do too much at the beginning, you won't have much energy and will be hurting later on trying to climb the very same number of steps the next day. It's not about how fast you can climb to "step number x" in the beginning, it's about being willing to climb a minimum number of steps everyday. Once you have turned it into a habit, climbing that minimum amount of steps becomes so much easier. Language learning is about being consistent in the end.

The Japanese have a saying: 七転び八起き 「ななころびやおき」 "Fall down 7 times, get up 8"

Don't be afraid to make mistakes! The worst you'll do is fall over, but you can always pick yourself back up. Beginners often start learning the language full of fire and determination, but quickly fizzle out due to fear of making mistakes. Look forward to making mistakes and learning from them instead. Even if climbing just a few steps feels painful, difficult, slow going and unsatisfying in the beginning, if you always stick it out, every day it becomes easier, and you definitely will achieve your goals!

>Many people stop the Core2K/6K deck after reaching 2000 words; partly because the first 2000 words (Core2K) are a lot more common than the rest, and partly because of the significant time investment involved in completing Core6K. As you can expect even Core2K to take about 3 months to complete, some prefer to skip it and begin reading native material immediately.

>Whether or not you feel that the time investment is worth it depends on your tolerance for looking up unknown words.

ah thank you for the advice, but I actually ment something different. I am about 3k into 2k/6k and am reading, but wondered if (after finishing) making one deck (including mining and the 2k/6k) or having two seperate decks (mining-deck+2k/6k) is more convenient for you.

Thanks anyway

Having an issue with mining. The number of mined words goes up way faster than I can review them unless I'm willing to sentence myself to insane numbers of reps daily. By the end of a book there's usually a big pile of words that are still "New", and that pile is only going to get bigger with the next book.

How would you address this?
>mine less words
But is skipping words any different than what's essentially happening now?

>don't read the next chapter until all words from the previous chapter are Young.
Compelling content is compelling though.

Any other ideas?

>>146489318
With VNs it's really easy to skip words. You mine the interesting ones and for the words that seem too rare/boring for your current level you just ignore them until later. But with manga you have to put in actual effort to look up words so you kinda might as well mine anything that you needed to look up.

You could, however, try to put more effort into guessing from the kanji and not looking up words that maybe you could have figured out from context.

Tbh though I would just deal with those insane reps. As long as you've done a couple thousand words from Core and know most of the Jouyou they shouldn't be that bad. You should be able to do more than 20 words a day with mined words.
>>
>>146489318
I have the same issue, consider installing morphman addon for anki.

The addon will analyze all the data you already know (based on what you've already studied in anki) and rearrange the new cards to try and give you an optimal learning order. So say you know 取る and 引く it will arrange the new cards to show your 取引 and 引きこもり first instead of say 子犬.

It doesn't solve the problem, but it allows you to study the random assortment of shit you mine much more effectively. It's helped me to deal with my mining vocab backlog a lot.

Be warned though, it takes a bit of fiddling to get set up properly.
>>
>>146489318
I have the same problem - I can have 200-300+ words by the end of a volume mined and ready, but by the time I actually review them all (three to four weeks later), I'll already be several volumes ahead, if not already finished with the series.

It's just part of the learning process. You didn't reread or put a hold to reading until you could understand the entire text's vocabulary with perfect recall as a kid. You just learned through exposure over time.

The best you can do is continue to read things in a similar vein (ie, stick to eroge, shounen, same author, same genre, whatever) and reinforce those words, with Anki acting as a secondary learning tool, instead of your primary one.

I'm stuck not being able to deal with the vocab overload from finishing core 6k and doing my own mining deck at the same time. By the time I finish core6k in two months, my mining deck will be larger - this is frustrating, but hopefully by the time I can tackle it, a lot of those words I'll be able to rate as Easy by the time I finally, officially "review" them.
>>
Finally reached the 2K milestone in Anki. Better finish Tae Kim too.
>>
>>146490486
Fuck are you doing? You should've finished TK ages ago
>>
>>146490548
Anki is easier, the grammatical concepts just go over my head and I put it down. When I do eventually pick it back up, I start from chapter 1 and work my way up. Needless to say, it's not very efficient.

>>
>>146491032
You can't learn Japanese
>>
>>146491032
Don't you just have to hover over a word and press a button and it mines it?

I don't even use rikai import because I use chrome, I add my mined words to a notepad and import them that way, and it's still the easiest thing in the universe

>>
Is there a way to take an import list and use it to move all the words to the front
Like if you go through Core 10k, but want to mine a list of 30 words each day and just move the cards to the front instead of going in the Core order
>>
>>146491357

>>146494806
>>146495029

People who find stuff written in hiragana hard to read probably just don't read enough real Japanese.

Good writing strikes a balance, but even native speakers have differing opinions on what that balance should be.

Heck, half the shitty light novels out there actually sacrifice readability to appeal to a chunibyo audience that thinks having more kanji makes something more "mature" or whatever it is that motivates chunis.

Not reading enough real Japanese can be just as much an issue of "hasn't been studying long yet" (i.e. "is a beginner) as it can be "reads nothing but anki cards" (i.e. is a retard).

And there's no shame in being a beginner.

I'm in uni and it took me 2 days. Obviously you just learn it "initially", so you somewhat know what's going on. After that you solidify it while learning grammar by writing sentences and vocab. But well, if it take's you more time it's alright. Learning japanese is not a race. Just be sure to constantly go forward. Learn something new everyday.

Why is 忘れられる in the negative here? I don't get it, the imouto CLEARLY didn't remember about it, she DID forget it, so why would the neechan replies to her "oh you couldn't forget about it right"? Wouldn't the obvious answer be "well you're still in elementary school it's normal you'd forget"?

Why 忘れられない and not 忘れられて(当然ね)?

Only mine every other thing you read. I mined a VN, then read an LN without mining while I caught up on the cards.

Or don't mine words until you've seen them 2-3 times and still can't remember them. That way you eliminate the really rare cards and the cards that you can learn without even mining them.

They were awful, the teacher told us not to be afraid to admit you like anime because it was just another hobby. Then every one of them burst out at once and started yelling the name of their favorite anime.
Then the teacher started to explain how to pronounce some of the characters but every fat weeb who already knew because they studied for at least 10 minutes at some point started chanting the characters with him as loud as possible to try and impress him.
Then the introductions, holy shit. Some dumbass said "hajimemashita desu. watashi no namae wa john-san desu. yorushiku onegaishimasu desu."
Combine all this with the fact that there was no air conditioning and I was wedged between two girls who must have weighed 200 pounds each and who squirmed in their seats every time the teacher said anything that I assume related to them at all... it was not a good time.

Seems like both indicate that an item is the n-th from a number of items.

Learning the kana right now and I have a question

Should I be aiming to be able to instantly think of the kana character in my head when I see the words "nu", "cha" etc

Or should I just aim to be able to recognize the kana and their readings when I come upon them in reading material, but can't instantly imagine the character in my head

Sorry if this is confusing but this is the best way I can explain..

>>146510443
You should know them inside out, but through reading you'll get tons of exposure for them.
You should also know how to write them properly, filling out the kana on a sheet of paper is good practice for remembering and producing them.
>>
>>146510443
I aimed to be able to write and recognize them, and I'd recommend being able to do both because kana are everywhere. I did it by following namasensei's videos, but basically just writing them over and over, drilling recognition practice on realkana, and eventually you'll be able to think of what they look like and sound like by memory. Your ability to remember them quickly will improve with more writing and recognition practice. I wouldn't do the same for kanji because there are thousands of complicated kanji with multiple readings, but there are less than like 100 katakana and hiragana combined and they're very important to know.
>>
>>146510443
if you can write kana within 3 seconds of being prompted and read them within 2 I think you can move on

eventually they will have to become as second nature as english letters if you expect to read anything at a bearable pace, but no one manually trains them to that level

This one actually works fine just by looking at the definitions in the dictionary:
体温: body temperature
うつる: transfer/infect
口触り: this ones a little trickier but it's splitting it into "mouth" and "feel" is close enough for learning purposes

They spent too long pressing it into shape and their body temperature (i.e. from their hands) has warmed up (literally "transferred into") the topping and it doesn't feel good in the mouth.

Actually after a little more thought, this is a bad explanation.
It's useless to ESL speakers, there's a lot of overlap between the two terms in both English and Japanese, and it's just not quite right.

I sadly don't have time for a complete and comprehensive explanation, but I'm sure one would pop up if you googled persistently enough.

The gist of it is:

第 is for a fixed or formally decided numbering.
Example 1: you build some towers or bridges or trains and number them. You've decided upon the numbering. It's not likely to change.
Example 2: you have some world wars and number them. They're in the past and it's a fixed and accepted list. The numbering is not likely to change.

目 is for things that just happen to be in a certain ordering right now.
Example 1: You pull some items from your pocket and lay them out in a line. Maybe your keys are the 四つ目 item you pull out. If you repeat this process, they may well be 一つ目 next time.
Example 2: You might watch some auditions and then describe the second applicant as 二つ目. Sure, this ordering is in in the past, but there may be a second round of auditions and the same applicant may later be 三つ目.

As you've probably already figured out, there's still a lot of overlap between the two definitions (For instance if you were listing ex-boyfriends, you would probably use 目, not 第. (They may be in the past, but you never formally numbered them.)) and they're also massively open to interpretation.

But anyway, that's the overall, general rule.
And that's without even getting into 番 or 番目...

You mean you can "read" VNs with a texthooker
If you could read plot VNs with no problem, then you could also read novels with no problem, although you might have to get used to some weird cultural references and old vocab if you go read souseki or something

But anon I haven't used a texthooker for the past 6 months. I guess I'm talking about the part with harder novels where writers seem to jump around different topics a lot within a page and their sentences are really long sometimes compared to VNs. Although, these are just my thoughts after trying to read nisioisin and being intimidated by the confusing prose.
>>
>>146523329
How many words do you know? I need to know the true number, not the 10000 meme
>>
>>146523426
I don't use Anki or any memorization program, I just read, if there's a word I don't know, I check it in a J-J dictionary or J-E dictionary if the former is too complicated(especially with really simple words).

Past VNs I read were Chaos;Child, Baldr Force, and Miagetegoran, none of them gave me any big trouble writing wise. There just seems to be a big gap in difficulty between "intermediate" writing and writing from the big authors.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you do each day and how long did it take you to get to that point then?
I started like 6 years ago but I didn't do enough early on and I did like nothing for 2 years. I have a vocab close to 10000 and it's just not enough for read comfortably.

Can you read relatively naturally? I have yet to hear any success stories with Anki at all. It is this general's biggest meme but every successful second language learner I find, on youtube or whatever, never used it. I have thought of ditching it but I have no other study plan except "put stuff in and do it each day"

Last time I tried to ditch it I ended up just doing nothing instead.

A silly little VN about shinigami that live with he MC so they can reap her in 30 days. Through a series of convoluted events one of the gamis was her great grandpa who became a reaper out of grief, stopped being a ghost after dating the MC so she could then wait 17 years so he could reincarnate into a teenager again to keep it going. Not a horrible experience, but thankfully I've moved to things with more depth.
>>
>>146523599
I started around 1.5 years ago, I started with Anki and only stopped using it around 6-8 months ago.

It takes me a long time to finish a VN, around 2 months. I've only really finished 8 VNs in the past year. I have really big problems with focusing, but I don't really have problems with the content itself. I'm not sure whether my reading is relatively natural or not, I think it's decent. Anyways, if you're thinking of dropping Anki, I say do it. I did it at around 6-7k words if I recall.

Hey /djt/ there is a lot of shit going on in my life so I don't have that much free time to learn.

What I would like to do is learning grammar and reading practice on one day and do anki reps on the next.

Is it possible to only do anki every 2 days instead of everyday?
What's the best method for doing so? I guess just not doing my reps every second day fucks anki up is that correct?

Your retention will be marginally lower but yes

Pretty sure doing anki every two days would fuck it up, although there are plenty of people in this thread that just do anki whenever they feel like it, based on the anki stats people post, so I guess you could do it every two days it just means your retention will be bad

I'd imagine it would be better to just minimise the amount of time you spend on it and do it everyday at a fixed time, like right before bed or as soon as you wake up
>>
>>146528215
>Pretty sure doing anki every two days would fuck it up
I could play around with the setting where you set when a new day starts, so I'm theoretically just doing 2 days at once, my retention will still go down, but oh well not having time to read is worse don't you think?

College was a rip off, I studied at college for 4 years, came out knowing about 5000 words.

More than the money though, was the wasted time. I wish someone had told me to do 10 words a day instead of what I was doing(around 4) long ago, I had so much free time but I just assumed I was on track as long as I did the school work.
Got my degree, still didn't know it, weird as fuck to have a Japanese degree and only know 5000 words ( I know close to 10000 now at least).

I did help a lot with grammar though. Can corefags understand these sentences?

>>
>>146505154
>Or don't mine words until you've seen them 2-3 times and still can't remember them. That way you eliminate the really rare cards and the cards that you can learn without even mining them.

I think this is probably a good idea, because in English we skip over words all the time that we don't know, it's only after seeing it a bunch of times we either just get it from context or think "what does it actually mean" and finally look it up.

There is basically no such thing as basic grammar or vocab. Except for really easy shit like 何. I found out the other day 宝箱 is not listed as a common word despite being in every jrpg.

It's all context, cuck is a common word on 4chan and probably unknown everywhere else.
>>
>>146532722
>cuck is a common word on 4chan and probably unknown everywhere else.

Sorry to be the one to tell you this but people say cuck at least 3 times per sentence on pretty much every website on the internet
>>
>>146532546
There honestly aren't many good grammar resources that I know of. If you look up ては in a dict you get

one after another;  indicates repeated action

as one of the meanings. It's that one. But that doesn't really tell you much and memorizing it like that is kind of inefficient. That's why I say grammar was one of the better things I got out of my college course.

He's right that using ば to mean "although"/"and" is not in tae kim though.

But it's dumb to act like classes are necessary to learn that since I know it without ever reading about it.

Anyway this conversation is silly so post hanzi grids.

I'm a little confused as to what I should do next now that I learned the kana.

Should I read through Tae Kim's guide?

Or do I just start drilling vocab via Anki

Also... How exactly do you *study* each individual kanji? Do you just look at the lines for a few minutes before moving on or..?
>>
>>146534574
you do both at the same time

Kanji study is a different thing where you have anki cards that just have kanji on as opposed to vocab like core has

For the sake of argument, let's say I passed N1 easily, but didn't get 100% or anything like that.

Can anyone recommend a book that's easy enough for me to read without having to look up every second word, but is mainstream enough (so no moe lolis and/or incest for example) that if a Japanese person asks me what I've read I won't be embarrassed if they later go and take a look at the book themselves?

I'm kind of guessing Natsume Souseki's to hard for just N1?
>>
>>146537931
Just read some Murakami or something then dude.

If you do Souseki, kokoro is known for being written in much more simple language than many of his other works. But I don't know why you would go back 50 years if you just want something mainstream to say that you've read so that you don't have to act awkward when you claim to have learned through reading but can't name anything because you've only read porn games

Anyone know of a userscript to change niconico links to their video titles? I have been screwing around trying to find this for an hour or two.

I have two leads: An old version of ( http://userscripts-mirror.org/topics/135141 ) which supported niconico, and:

This huge repository of niconico extensions ( http://efcl.info/niconico_greasemonkey/ ) that might have some info on this but I hardly even know where to start.

I don't know if people sometimes write a word in hiragana instead of kanji (unless maybe it's by hand and they forgot the kanji) but you do need to know how to say each word along with what it means. However, you don't need to memorize every reading of individual kanji unless you really want to, just how to say actual words

The core deck is inconsistent like that. There are plenty of words in hiragana only that are usually written in kanji. And a few ones that are *usually* in hiragana, but in the core they're kanji.
>>
>>146545789
Pretty sure that is usually kanji, Jisho doesn't say usually kana either

I like to try and always learn the kanji version of words even if they are usually kana anyway, that way if you do see them in kanji, which you inevitably will at some point, you'll know what it is
