Definitely the stuff up until a maybe 2-3 years ago has been like this. That's why it's taken anime characters so long to adopt to smartphones, since the mangaka/directors weren't used to them.
There are some staples that are just part of anime now, though. Like bloomers, which haven't been in schools for decades but still make appearances for fanservice.

I'm sure Japanese teenagers are no different than Western ones nowadays, the must spend 90% of their time on their phones. Some other were anachronisms make sense in Japan (most Japs don't have their own computers or TVs) but basically everyone has a smartphone.

There was a lives-in-Japan poster in Non Non Biyori threads who said that smartphones and the internet aren't as widespread in rural Japan as they are in the cities, so it may depend on setting.

Asian faggot here, yeah most of the times it's the girls that do it but it's a special thing when a boy writes you one. The difference is very cute too. Girls will have colourful letters and envelopes, different coloured pens, stickers, etc., and guys will usually keep it simple but it would be more heartfelt and straightforward.
