There was no jump for me, I never made the distinction when picking which manga I would read and the lack of furigana never manifested itself as a problem to me. Just use kanjitomo and there's pretty much no difference from reading with furigana.

Once you start reading and mining a lot of words you'll be surprised how much time you'll have to spend on Anki due to the buildup of reviews from all the new cards over the week.

I thought this meant "persistence / insistence / adherence" for months before I realised my mistake

I figured it was just one of those words that uses weird kanji

Do we really have to bring this back?

For future reference (on how to tell if something is a shitpost):
>calls the community made guide/whatever method a piece of shit with no reasoning given why
>insults someone giving helpful advice with no reasoning given why
>attempts to create arguments over virtually nothing (eg opinions without facts)
>"spam questions" that are easily answered
>uses obtuse Japanese fragments interspersed with English to attempt bypass people trying to filter the shitposts
>any mention of anime being shit, or "real Japanese"
>spells the word as romanji
It's pretty easy to tell at this point.

For newcomers, if in doubt, use the guide's advice as a fallback if you're genuinely not sure if it's "shitpost advice" or not.

If you're curious about how anki actually works, I suggest reading up on the "forgetting curve" and how "spaced repetition system"s aka SRS actually work in regards to your memory.
>>

>Anki is a huge fucking meme. Holy shit.

Assuming you are not >>146448489, because that post pretty much highlights a clear lack of understanding the use of で in a rather simple sentence, you can try to read the end of a sentence first. Just skip to the 。and then backtrack 1 particle at a time.

>>146449548

reading more is a fucking meme when I can't understand what I'm reading at all
>>
>>146450341
Reading/listening more is the answer to everything, yes it's hard, but do you really expect learning a language to be easy? You read hard shit that you barely understand in order to improve and advance
>>
>>146450341
You should probably start by reading manga aimed at 18+ year olds before you try your luck with all the grown up stuff mentioned in the guide.
>>
>>146447348
I'm probably learning the wrong or uncommon readings for many words because I just take whatever Anki gives me. I've changed a couple readings because they finally showed up in voiced lines so I knew which reading they used.
>>
>>146450515
>>146450797

> JUST READ MORE

ok let's give it another go then since you insist so much:

> まあそんな事言ってられるのも今のうちだがね

all I see in that sentence is "maa" "something like that" "itterareru" which I assume is say being conjugated somehow maybe into passive and done to the speaker "and" "ima no uchi daga" no fucking clue about that last one now my something explanatory

that was a nice exercise I will surely improve if I just keep going!

Two years since I've been interested and eight months since getting serious with this garbage language and this is all I can manage.

しょうがない
When they say read more, they mean read more and look up and study the grammar you don't know.

言っている → 言ってる → 言ってられる

だが is ですけど, kinda.

I can't make out the meaning of the sentence but I'm gonna plead "no context".
>>
>>146449717
Is it cheating to add those images?
>>
>>146451307
Nothing shown after you answer could possibly be cheating.
>>
>>146451095
Well if you don't understand a part and you can't figure it out through googling and shit then just skip it or write it down somewhere and come back to it when you've improved, or just stop reading it for today and read something easier, and then go back to it tomorrow and see if you can get it then when you're not as salty

Yes it's frustrating when you can't work shit out, but reading really is the most effective method, everyone has parts that they just can't figure out no matter what they do, you just have to try your best to work it out or skip it until you're better
>>
>>146451095
That られる is the potential form of いる, not a passive.

You would be able to deduce things like that yourself if you had a better command of the grammar obtained by reading and actively listening to the language a lot, combined with lots of study. It takes effort and time, and I'm sorry about that, but it can't be helped.

Here:
> まあ
Well,
>そんな事言ってられるのも
Being able to say such a thing also
>今のうちだがね
Is only for the time being, you know.

>Well, you won't be able to say that for much longer, though.

Just keep trying.

This is why you read things that have a translation. So you can actually learn from your mistakes and things you don't understand.

Naturally you won't magically be able to read Japanese by staring at a bunch of sentences you don't understand.
>>
>>146451999
今のうち is literally "the space of right now." He's saying that he's able to say such a thing within that space, which in my mind naturally excludes him from being able to say it outside that space, i.e. in the near future.
>>

>>
>>146453194
Well you certainly speak more languages than me then. But I learned English without the use of official translations as they didn't exist for my native language.

While it may not be the most efficient way of studying, exposing yourself to the language will bring you progress as long as you have an idea of what is going on. Reading more will work, though obviously you should consult the DOJG or google when you have issues with certain points of grammar.
>>
>>146453316
That wasn't me, I speak 3. It doesn't really matter much though because the same holds for pretty much any skill. You won't learn math by doing exercises all on your own and never checking the solution manual either.

>efficient
Unless you're a worthless NEET with all the time in the world or plain enjoy wasting your time, efficiency is pretty fucking important.
>>
>>146452092
>>146453411
I implore you to read a work translated into your native language and compare it to the original. Translations are riddled with mistakes even when languages are closely related and it's sickening. The general gist is still conveyed properly, but the details get lost in translation.

Comparing what you're reading to a translated work is not the same as checking a solution manual for math. I won't say that checking a solution for the proper method is bad, but you could achieve the same result by proper study of a method's description. Though in that case you might end up misunderstanding something or doubting yourself. Making mistakes while reading is fine, and to be expected. You just have to realize what mistakes you made when things don't make sense later on in the story.
>>
>>146453609
I think the best effect from checking a translation is the reinforcement you get if you find that your interpretation is in the right ballpark. It's kind of like going back to something you could not do at all only to find it incredibly easy, that sense of achievement and positive reinforcement is good for learning I think.

The only thing to keep in mind is a healthy sense of not coddling yourself with too much.

Reminder to stay hydrated for max studying performance! Even mild dehydration can make you feel tired, sluggish, and moody. Believe it or not, this can happen with as little as a loss of 1.5 percent of your body’s water weight. So keep a glass of water nearby throughout the day and sip on it regularly.
>>
>>146453757

Could someone explain to me the meaning of (棒)? Like that.

Was reading a manga and basically someone was saying some lie to another and at the end of the sentence there was (棒). Is it to show the person was lying?

When I googled (棒) or かっこ棒 I only found people talking about 棒読み which means reading in a monotone way. I'm not sure I see the link here, unless perhaps it's there to notify the character who's lying or saying something uncomfortable is speaking in a non-natural, aka monotonous way?

I did my reps today.
I don't feel like doing anything else besides just having Japanese lets plays in the background while I funpost in other places.

My goal is make Japanese learning easier for JRPG or other gamers. I am compiling a list of links to scripts.

Does anybody know anything about actually extracting the script or anything like that from the source game itself?

Unrelated but to anybody who has played Final Fantasy 9 I recommend checking this out.

http://lunar.littlestar.jp/stardust/english/FF9/FFIX-script-disc1.html

They completely disregard everything and the Japanese guy who runs this gives his input on how silly the English translation is.

I highly recommend it one of my favorite scripts im reading.

Some people will tell you it's useless and others will tell you that it definitely helped in learning Japanese.

I'm on the "writing is definitely something you should learn" side but you should simply try it yourself and form your own opinion.

To learn how to write RTK is definitely the best and fastest way to go about it because of how it's constructed, don't even think of learning how to write using shitty methods like Genki or trying to learn how to write each individual Kanji on the go as you see them or something.

I haven't felt that way in a long time, on the other hand although I'm now at a "decent level" I still feel like there are too many things I don't know yet and it's kind of scary and overwhelming.

But as they say "someone who's really giving his all into something will never feel content about their own level", kind of the same in art, no matter how much you improve you'll always feel like you're never good enough, so I suppose we're doing something right.

It's unlikely you'll get a chance to demonstrate it outside Japan, and even on the off chance your aunt asks to write one of those korean hieroglyphics it probably won't be worth the hundreds of hours it took to prepare.

Writing to improve your retention or just for fun is reasonable though.

Writing will indeed improve your retention, though if it's because you're spending more time looking at the kanji or because you're actually writing it, I have no idea.
>>

I meant that in the context of dating a moon girl.

>>146460666
I haven't tried it because by the time it got out I had already learned 3000 Kanji through RTK1+3.

My opinion is that from the information I gathered it's a great book which teaches you Kanji in the right direction. RTK is great but you NEED to put work into it and on the SIDE - which means looking up Kanji as you go for extra info + looking up Koohi as you go for more stories and info. It can be a lot of work for lazy people who need to be spoonfed.

The book you link is solid and has everything in there you make you successful it seems, so go for it, you even bought it anyway.
I know there's a deck that's been made for it recently, so check ankiweb maybe.

This is true but it's also dumb to learn things just because some people on the internet tell you you need to know it if you want to be a "real" japanese learner.

Learn it if you need to, or if you are aware of the benefits and drawbacks and decide you want to anyway. Don't learn it because someone in DJT made fun of you for being illiterate or told you it was impossible to read handwriting if you don't know how to write kanji.

Theres a ton of great stuff in the OP now.

I just recently checked it out after two years. Whoever made it and runs it does a great job tbqh.

I remember there being a ton of shitposting about CORkun or something back in early 2015.
>>
How do you count in Japanese generally? As if you were counting seconds, or amount of times you did a push up?
I've been doing:
>いち に さん し ご ろく なな はち きゅう じゅう
then changing to じゅうよん for 14, then にじゅうよん for 24, etc.

However, I watched a video of a Japanese person counting like:
>いち に さん し ご ろく しち はち きゅう じゅう
and sticking with し for じゅうし にじゅうし

I've been doing my method for over 2 years now, is it wrong enough to change how I count?

し - なな sounds weird. Personally, I use し - しち for the first 10 numbers and then switch to よん - なな.
>>
>>146461416
I always use よん and なな, I was under the impression that those were both the more common readings, and they're always used after you count past 10 so might as well use them before 10 too

Using し and なな together seems weird considering し is an onyomi and なな is a kunyomi
>>
>>146461726
>considering し is an onyomi and なな is a kunyomi
This. You should just pick either し・しち or よん・/なな and then be consistent.

>>

>>
>>146463122
>It just takes time for your brain to make the connections.
Yeah, that's the part that sucks. There's pretty much no other way around it other than watching yourself struggle with the language day after day. Just make sure you don't stay in comfort zones and neglect the challenges you need. Personally, I think listening is a crucial part of getting acquainted with the language. You can theoretically learn to read Japanese without understanding a single word of spoken Japanese, but the spoken language gives it a whole other dimension.
>>
>>146451307
If cheating is something that makes it easier to "win", then by all means, cheat as much as you possibly can. Language acquisition isn't a race wherein you can be disqualified.

The note images are being converted to text, as well. You can see around 50 or so entries on the basic page which are complete, as in the entire entry in full text with no images.
Here is the second entry for "が", for example"

It's the best one you could use, but you don't have to use it. You can stop kanji study any time you like and go full grammar and vocab, just don't switch to an inferior kanji study method in lieu of actually learning japanese.
>>
>>146465783

>>146465783

>unless you're using them to reinforce grammar exclusively
I do it for fun, and to keep Japanese in my brain. I just can't find anything I like enough to read regularly.
>>
>>146465450
I used a radicals deck and memorized how to write them, and then started core 2k so could better understand how they're constructed and I could write them if I wanted to, in a close enough stroke order. You don't have to do it that way, but some people find it easier if they know the radicals. You can write the kanji to help yourself remember, if you want, but it'll take longer to go through anki each day. Assuming you're using the core 2k deck, I don't think it's really meant for learning how to write the kanji because that would be a reverse process. It's just for recognition. If you can recognize a word and know what it sounds like, you can search for it and see what it looks like, or use the kanji suggestions while typing.

It helps but is not necessary. You can get the same effect by imagining how to write the character.

More likely just because it's hard ton not fuck up a small thing on a full test somewhere, even if it's just accidentally filling in the wrong bubble even though you knew the answer.

Also, on the N1 some of the questions can be tricky, so I think natives could easily mess a couple up. Like, probably similar difficulty to high school standardized tests where you'll understand the passage but people don't get perfect because they are filled with dumb questions like "what is the best title for this passage? a) i love cock b) i realy love cock c) cock is great d) the greatest cock"

Just having specific goals helps people feel motivated even if achieving those goals won't bring any special benefit to them by itself.

Nah, I bet Japan is full of people stupid enough to make a bunch of mistakes, not to mention people who can't read a higher level text and interpret it to answer a question.

If I'm already using RTK for kanji and Japanese Core 2000 for vocab and sentences, what should I use for grammar? I'm leaning towards “A Guide to Japanese Grammar” by Tae Kim, which appears to be the most comprehensive, but I've also heard good things about the Genki books.

Depends on what is in the deck anon used to generate the grid and which field within that deck was the target for the kanji.

Still don't get it. How does "to leave someone doing something as they like" make sense in this context?
>>
>>146481718
Think more of letting him remain in saying things that make her feel good.
>>
>>146481718
I didn't read any of those links the other guy posted for you nor do I think I really have that great an understanding of おく, but I'd read it as in the guys saying things that make her feel good and the feeling stays with her for a while afterwards, like the feelings have a deep impression on her and last a while
>>
>>146481731
I guess that makes sense in this context. So is she telling him to keep saying things that make her feel good? させておく is the first grammar that my brain genuinely can't comprehend.
>>
>>146481799
>So is she telling him to keep saying things that make her feel good?
Yeah, kind of. Trying to put it into an English context, think of a guy saying that his mother in law's cooking taste great and she responses, saying he can say he can say that all he likes- in that sort of way. Although it doesn't carry the same nuance of giving permission that is in the English, which even then doesn't really mean that.
>>
>>146481868
Surely >>146481776 makes more sense

おく is just doing something in advance for the future, so in a "saying" context wouldn't it just means saying something now that has a lasting affect into the future, makes more sense imo than " letting him remain in saying things"
>>
>>146482129
>おく is just doing something in advance for the future
Or the present if the 使役動詞 is used, which it is in this situation. It can be ambiguous, as pointed out in the entry for おく in the DoBJG.

To be honest I don't really like providing quasi-translations for people because I'd rather give people a set of tools or information they can use to see what makes the most sense in the context with their own understanding.

Really, you're better off keeping those little nuance related things in the back of your mind and, despite the shitty meme; "don't think, feel".

To put it into a more international perspective, if Japan nuked America during that war, instead of America nuking Japan, America and Americans would still be upset about it on a deeply engrained existential level for the next thousand years.
I mention America, for relevance, as 4chan has a majority American traffic.

You're animals, even je Japanese didn't do worse:

Lingchi (凌迟; 凌遲; língchí; ling-ch'ih, alternately transliterated ling chi or leng t'che), translated variously as death by a thousand cuts (杀千刀/千刀万剐; 殺千刀/千刀萬剮; shā qiān dāo/qiāndāo wànguǎ), the slow process, the lingering death, or slow slicing, was a form of torture and execution used in China from roughly AD 900 until it was banned in 1905. It was also used in Vietnam. In this form of execution, a knife was used to methodically remove portions of the body over an extended period of time, eventually resulting in death.

Lingchi was reserved for crimes viewed as especially severe, such as high treason, patricide, or matricide. Some Westerners were executed in this manner. Even after the practice was outlawed, the concept itself has still appeared across many types of media.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingchi

And you're still keeping on torturing your own people, no wonder they were thrilled to see the Japanese come and accepted japanese names that joyfully.
