I'm the OP. I didn't know that, I tried to not research much to don't get spoilers. Yeah it's character development but... It's not why I started reading this manga, you can't deny it made a sudden 180º change in its tone. You may say "huur go back to battleshnonen" but there's actually nothing wrong in liking an action high violence manga, with still some reasoning and history behind it and not just for the sake of gore.

Now I'm reading some slice of life drama thing. Yeah, some people like that, but that is my least favorite type of story, I don't need another person's story telling me how to live my own life like a support group or a self-help book.

I'm not sure how you got such an impression from /a/ in the first place. I mean, way way WAY back yes, everyone would say that it was just plain awesome, and it was. But now that's generally a lot more qualified, it's been years since I saw anyone say anything but "the manga has an incredible start that will appeal to a lot, but over the course of events the tone definitely changes a lot and you need to be ready for that." The author is still good, the art is still good, there is still a lot to say about it, but it's also understandable if you didn't like that change. Still worth reading the first bunch of volumes at least but the like/don't like split becomes stronger after that. It's still good, but maybe not you're good.

I mean, some of this though should have been clear purely given the fact that it's not AU, it's historical fiction/adaption. So think about it: ultimately, we KNOW the fate of the world here, because it's our world. The vikings aren't going to win in the end. A lot of the big dreams and plans they have early on, reality won't go that way. The entire culture you're reading about and may grow attached to is ultimately doomed, they're existing in a fragment of time. When you read a story like that you have to have a certain mindset, it really is more of a "journey" rather then "destination" thing, about the details and compelling characters and their lives and struggles, because the big picture is known. That's not for everyone, it can be a rough feel, just like the real world itself.

I think people just gloss over those themes as they find them uninteresting and concentrate on the action.

I've followed the manga since the beginning after reading planetes beforehand (and loving it). I bought the first four big books available in my language (that lead up to the end of the prologue) and although I've continued to enjoy it since the time skip I won't deny that it hasn't been really really boring at times.

. And no, I don't need badass Vikings carrying longboats to enjoy a story but I need much more than a boring pacifist Buddha moping from one interesting character to another achieving very little for himself. The plot feels sluggish and I don't think it's just down to only getting a paltry 20 odd pages a week.

I'm glad that Thorfinn is finally facing a real test of his ethical beliefs now but it's been a long time since he has been really challenged. And that's what I want from a protagonist, to face challenges and overcome them.

I'm actually fine with the farm/SoL elements and relative lack of fighting, but I do wish Thorfinn wouldn't mope quite so much. His introspective/angsty moments are dull, and it feels like every arc is accompanied by long stretches of him trying to decide what to do, which just isn't very interesting.
