Dealing with change and mono no aware are going to end up being major themes of this manga. Jun's past with Tomo is already dead and buried, but he's still struggling trying not to let it go, trying to deny the change that is already upon him. Also Misuzu is going to go to a fancy all girls academy and leave Tomo behind, she's going to start dating the doofus because she doesn't want to be so cold and isolated anymore, and Carol is going to force the nature of her relationship with Sempai to change completely around.

The second half of your post is where you start to make sense. After all, Jun and Tomo were best friends in childhood, didn't see each other at all for a while, and then when they met again, Tomo was quite clearly a girl. She was wearing a skirt, after all. Jun quite clearly didn't deal with this change very well, and they didn't talk much for a year, when Jun and Misuzu dated/broke up. After that, Jun tried pretending nothing was different, that his childhood friend was still the guy he was to him back them. He didn't deal with that change. So something needed to influence him that he should treat Tomo like he used to.

What was that? We can't say, but a denied confession makes no sense. After all, he's the one that wants to treat her like he used to. He's the one who so desperately wants to be able to live up to her example. He quite clearly doesn't believe he's capable of that now, but he's forging forwards once again. What was the event that made him want to live up to her? That is what we need to ask ourselves.

Basically, yeah. "Trauma" might be pushing it, but he's got some hang-ups.

I'd argue that this is all really a coming-of-age story for Jun, even though he's so seldom at the forefront. He's really the only character who seems to have a significant arc going on. Tomo is super static and has been basically the same throughout. Misuzu has some interesting stuff going on, the whole trying to be more affectionate thing (pic related), the college thing, and using her bullying powers to push Tomo and Jun together. Carol is great but she has very little going on, Sempai is basically nonexistent, and Tanabe is actually really interesting but gets no play.

Anyway, it's a really interesting way to tell this story. Jun would typically be your protagonist and Tomo would be almost a comic relief character. Switching it around like this encourages the reader to try and piece everything together like a jigsaw puzzle. The biggest question has always been what exactly is going on inside Jun's head, it's by far the most important key to the narrative, and it wouldn't be a question at all if he had been the MC. That's why this arc is so different and important, because it's the first time we're getting significant insight into Jun's motivation.

And then, something may or may not have happened. Perhaps it was something during those 3 days of working out? Perhaps Misuzu's body couldn't take it. I doubt it's something which happened to Tomo, but maybe it happened to Misuzu and Tomo was the one who helped Misuzu out. Something rekindled that desire to catch up to her and be a better person. Either that or something happened which made Jun feel he had to catch up.

In any case, we don't have the information necessary to tell exactly what happened, but we can make damn good guesses at the motivations of those actions and the effects thereof.

I don't think he's repeating it to convince himself. I think the punchline is that he's pissed, and in his mind he's punishing her. When he forcefully says "there definitely isn't!" the subtext is "especially not YOU!" because he dislikes her right now. Because she's being annoying. And she's not just being annoying because she keeps bugging him about it, but also because she must think he's a fucking idiot if she feels safe making it so obvious that she likes him in panel 3. Having to pretend that he's completely oblivious and retarded has been grating on him this whole time, and she makes it worse by rubbing it in his face like this.

Anyway, to me this is the most interesting thing about this manga, the way that it takes the whole oblivious male MC thing and turns it on its head. Ostensibly the theme of this 4koma is that Jun is totally oblivious, but in reality Tomo is the oblivious one which is never more neatly captured than in the chapter in question.

This would blow my mind. It would be way too level-headed and realistic for a romcom 4koma which is why it would be amazing.
