It came out at the time when ecchi anime novelty was dying down, and weebs started to think anime is serious and edgy

Higurashi, Elfen Lied, Eva, FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Death note and Bleach were height of their popularity, then came out something that looked like a grotesque parody of "the old"
Easy target for weebs that needed an image of the enemy

(To be honest I prefered those times, at least we had better animation and less 'healing slice of life' anti-funny comedies)
